Frankly, to my ears

The Nagra is not as transparent as the US$140 passive Axiom as I heard today at CP's place. However, the Nagra did bring a lot dynamic to the sound getting everyone excited. IMO, the passive preamp is more transparent than any active preamp but loses ground on other area.

More about the trip today.

CP's Music First TVC and GM20 really frustrated my expectation this morning. The treble is simply gone until we removed the Music First. I had a word with Feikeung and Patrick, the GM20 should sound better with more mercy.

About the poor Music First TVC. It sounded flat and dull, even the cheap Axiom won in all aspects. What a joke! So why the hell the Music First sounded so good in Excel with Graaf and Maggie 1.6.

The best sounding system today was still the mono modena plus NagraPLP. Given the cost of Axiom is only 1/100 of the PLP. Me and Patrick probably cannot resist buying a passive for playing few vocal songs.

Dr King,

The TVC project is a no return road to me. Let me fix up your TVC and further report. I wish to play the TVC to you when it's up and running.

the whole thing is still connected. to test it, you just have to put it on top of a piece of wood/newspaper. so you can have fun in no time.

Hi dennis
So which amp do you like most for ESL57?
Is Graaf GM20 good?
I am planning to acquire a pair of T16 monoblock when I next come to HK

dkkyu,

I did not do anything to purposely make the Nagra stands out. Everything there is my equipment, other than the Modena of course, and I cherish every one of them. For the TVC, I can play with it upside down, inside out and there is just no room for mistake. The Graaf is there from day one and I have adjusted the bias carefully to the factory specifications. Frankly, from memory, I think it does sound better than that in Excel driving the Maggie but your memory of the good sound is relative to how it sounded with the Graaf 13.5.

No doubt the Nagra + Modena is a clear winner which won the heart of everybody, except you, may be. I'm sure feikeung will dash to buy a Nagra PLP. But there is nothing wrong with your ears, it's your preference. Just like the V72/V69 may not be better than the Nagra/Modena in any aspect, it did not disappoint a lot of people but I can see CH Lee shaking his head proclaiming it has poor tonal quality!

CP,

Good day. What a wonderful day at your place meeting old friends.

The reason I suspect your Music First was that most treble seemed disappearing when we played the first few songs leading to my suspicion on some cable or switch mismatching possibly could happen yesterday. The Music First was quite impressive when I was drew to attention at Excel. However, it turned out to be a low-end baller in yesterday show, completely pissing off even by the cheapest little Aixom. I couldn't tell whether that was 英式幽默 again?

The PLP sounds reasonably good but really not too impressive to me. It is surely a high-end pre-amp but I think I'd heard quite a number of similar or even better sounding preamp elsewhere. Judging the price of PLP, I think there is alway a better and more cost effective alternative for myself. Anyway, it's only a matter of personal preference and more importantly how deep is one's pocket.

The greatest part and fun to me and all guests was about mix and match and all kinds of your arrangement. I really enjoyed your party and your friendship. You made me feel free and warmth everytime at your place despite the fact that there was no wine serving nor air-conditioning plus expensive sofa available for the guests. But who cares? My biggest thanks from my heart again.

Everyone knows I am a classical blind and I only started to appreciate, or more appropriatelt to learn, classical little by little after meeting HC Lee, you and Limage etc. About Sutherland and Callas, I started up on Sutherland after Feikeung played me some opera (can remember who the song and singer were) with his Maggie 3.5. The Callas did not appeal as much as Sutherland, 李香蘭 etc to me yesterday perhaps she was not Chinese nor British. but I am sure my appreciation will turn to Callas's oneday. So let me bid bid in ebay first. Any recommendation on Callas's album for beginner?

PS: I could look at Feikeung's baby face (very little wrinkle I was surprised) with some frustration since the moment you told us forget bringing in the wine.

Dear powercord,

Long time no hear.

I myself really appreciated the gifted tranparancy from GM20 OTL. It sounded so open and detailed when played at Patrick's current system or even during the 30 second listening before Fiekeung's GM20 dropped dead at my place when I made my first acquaintance with Feikeung one and a half year back. However, the GM20 at CP's lost too much ground to the Modena OTL, even CP's mighty telefunken amp showed no mercy to the GM on live performance music. Perhaps too large CP's studio is and a second try should be given to GM20. I had a few words with Feikeung and Patrick, we believe the GM20 should sound better in a smaller place.

I have no idea about the transcendent OTL, but given its lower price, it could be a best buy winner but yet to be confirmed thru listening test. Will you consider bringing over to my place for a try when you collect it at HK?

dkkyu, feikeung,

The best stereo recording of Maria Callas is this one - the Mad Scenes. This is recorded in Kingsway Hall. I have this at my place yesterday. Pity we did not have the time to really enjoy Callas raucous but songful treble with this one.

I apologize again for the wine. I did buy 2 bottles of very good red from the West Palace in Miramar. But as you can see, the senile dementia syndrome starts to show. Before I forget, can you name a few of the better preamps here as I really want a good modern preamp to be in my stable.

This compilation 6CD is widely available, at only ~$100 !

But what are we talking about. It's CD!

Beware, Callas will show very conclusively a good preamp is superiror to TVC.

Thanks cp and dj,

I feel itchy. I guess I can buy the best classic CD first following with more of her favourite LP.

Let's switch to preamp for sharing

The last strong contender I felt impressive was the Jadis 80MC at Kowloon Bay. I recall we tried different MC step-up including EAR, Kondo, Ortofon and Audio Note etc to match the vdh Colibri and Linn Akiva. Perhaps the Jadis and those MC cow were too strong for the lady Colibri, the bird flu spread out and the bird died as a result.

The Matisse ref, built like a tiger tank, was another impressive preamp in my mind only when using the best sounding T7 (A2900?) and X7 (803s?) tubes with matching amp. The second hand price dropped to around $20K makes it look very atractive but on the dark side, it burns the tube quickly.

I guess CP's audio research ref is also a strong contenter although I have not heard of any Audio Research reference before. CP, can we test drive it along with the Graaf in your place at your convenience?

If possible, I also wish to try the BAT and latest Audio Note M7 (M10 or M8 is too expensive).

Any suggestion on ss preamp? How about Roland, Gryphon, Cello? No body interested in SS?

[#3716] Callas

dkkyu,

I have had the Jadis JPS2 for more than 2 years. It has the same line stage as the JP80MC. The JPS2 was ousted by my ARC Ref.1 and from that you can probably tell my preference. I have also compared side by side the ARC with AN M6, Mark ML32 and with its younger brother ARC Ref.1 Mk2 and the Ref.1 still holds its position in my system.

The Nagra has been compared alongside an ARC Ref.3 and I still prefer the Nagra. There aren't too many choices remaining, and I cast my hope on AN M8, EAR, CJ, LAMM and Aesthetix but the something shall not be more expensive than the Nagra. So the M8 and CJ are out. Any more suggestions from what you have heard and deemed better than the Nagra? I'm open.

dkkyu, feikeung,

I do have some Callas recordings. If you just want to check it out, feel free to take them from my collection for some listening.

If you are looking for a good Casta Diva, my ultimate version is the one by Monserrat Cabelle. It has a better recording, sweeter voice and in my opinion, better coloratura as well. The one by Rosa Ponselle, who was opened praised by the arrogant Callas as her voice idol, is also excellent but the recording is just too old.

A few more beers after he has finished the 1.5L jar of Thai beer, feikeung enjoyed a summar siesta and slept like a baby with a smiling face when Edmund and I were playing the casta diva by Callas and Gruberova. Edmund found the Judds and immediately fell in love with both the mother and the daughter.

CP and DJ,

After a second thought, I think I shall go for something easier to me such as Carmen or La Traviata again. Hope you understand I am a real beginner knowing only a few French words. Going something in depth would put me off from opera.

I guess I can bid a few EMI Lp from eBay for few dollars each. Hopefully when Feikeung or any of you pal came to my place in next visit will be able to play some Callas Lp.

[#3721] Nagra PLP
CP, I must confess you are only 50% true in regards to Judds mother and daughter. I thought no man would love their mother-in-law at the same time when they fall in love with a woman. Man I am not Yeung,
Feikeung enjoyed a summer siesta and slept like a baby. It may due to feikeung gets used to sleep in Sauna place.
That Judds CD sounds more joyful in Nagra than V72 while we play the track “Don’t be cruel”.
I vote Nagra too.
I believe Lee feels little disappointing that day we didn’t try Nagra PLP phono .

[#3722] GG Preamp
Dear Ricci,

Sorry I didn't catch GG in first instance? I guess it was ground grid, right? How did you get hold one of this GG? Any of their demo room in HK?

I have found out my cable specially made with RCA plug one end while using Jones plug the other end for connection to QUAD II.

After connecting the QUAD II to QUAD 22 pre-amp using a modern cable, as well as separate power cords for both QUAD II, it seems the QUAD amp system has achieved quite a significant improvement in all aspects. I took this advice from Timtube and it works pretty well at my place. Have a try if you could modify the jones plugs and get a pair of yourself (ie powercord haha) for the QUAD II.
