[#362] QUAD ESL
Hi Pat

I must visit your place and listen to your ESLs some time in the future. I do hope that I can get a pair when I have regained my freedom.

Sure! No problem. You are welcome JL. I think you will like my system. By the way, what kind of speaker you are using now?

I heard so many good comments about BC1. Especially the super tweeter. I think it must be an entiry different ball game compared with esl57 due to the nature of the speakers.

What type of music do you usually listen? Do you listen to vocalist?

cp,

Is there any protection circuit installed by One thing audio? If so, can you remove the circuits for better sound?

Dennis,

Yes there is a protection installed.
I think I will try to get the best out of the esl57 first before removing the protection.

Monday will be difficult for me. Will other weekdays suit you?
Will call to arrange.

Thanks a lot.

The treble does open up quite a bit.
I'm now trying to tame the bass.

Patrick,

Note para 2. for Audible Illusion preamp users.

The 6DJ8, 6922, 7308 Saga - Part 1

Posted by Joe S on March 29, 1999 at 19:59:08:

Well this time I’ll be reviewing substitutes for the ubiquitous Sovtek 6922. That means it is time for 6DJ8s, 6922s, 7308s and a few other odds & sods thrown in for good measure. Once again all the usual caveats apply, so here we go!

Special warning to Audible Illusions preamp users:
The one you can say for the Sovtek is that you can run it hard and it can take it - and apparently that’s exactly what AI does. Unfortunately the classic NOS tubes in this family just cant take this kind of treatment and will rapidly fail when used in these units (and some of you guys have the fried tubes to prove it!). So you AI users are probably best off limiting yourselves to the Sovtek, the Russian 6H23N & 6N1P, the 7DJ8 and the E288CC. There may be others the range of tube types and variations is quite literally bewildering but these are the ones I’m aware of that should be able to handle the higher stresses of this brand of preamps. I review the Edicron, Siemens E288CC and 6H23N here but there are other brands for some of these. I’ve seen Phillips E288CCs & Amperex 7DJ8s advertised on some web sites in the past and there are probably others. It might be worth your while chasing them down & evaluating them for yourself to increase the number of alternatives for use in your AI.

A Note on Numbers
The 6DJ8 family was originally developed by Amperex. The first tube in the family was the steel pinned 6DJ8 followed by the gold pinned 6922 and 7308. These latter two were premium versions rated as 10,000 hour life tubes. The 6922 was a premium industrial version and the 7308 was the top of the line guaranteed low noise version. Frankly, I’ve measured & listened to a lot of these and there is no correlation between model # and sound quality. Some of the best sounding tubes in this family are 6DJ8s and some of the worst are 6922s & 7308s. So take each tube on it’s own individual merits rather than judging it by its model number or pin material (gold pins do not necessarily = better sound). The Europeans used different model numbers to identify these tubes, by the way. In their numbering system the 6DJ8 was an ECC88, the 6922 was an E88CC and the 7308 was an E188CC. Oh, by the way, a 7DJ8 is basically a 6DJ8 with a 7 volt heater voltage rather than the 6DJ8’s 6 volt rating. What does 6H23N mean? Who the hell knows! I sure don’t.

Content noted. Thanks. I am using ECC88 on my AI, I wonder if I can use E88CC as alternative.

ECC88 = E88CC

I got a few 6N1P, if you want, I can give you a few for trial. They are dirt cheap.

6N1P is of course very robust, however, my experience is they are a bit noisy.

Thanks JL & CP,

May I try a pair of your 6N1P. FYI, I am happy with my Telefunken ECC88 as well as my Mullard E88CC. They r good tubes.

Copy from Quad Group.

FeiKeung Hing, mind to share your experience on 989?
============
Hi Neil
I have 989's , I haven't heard the 988.
I think I've written about this here before if you do a search.
When the 989 first came out I travelled a long way to several dealers
to hear them. They sounded dreadful each time. I knew they weren't
supposed to sound that bad. I took something of a chance when I saw
some for a very reasonable (?!!!) price. When I got them home I had
severe frustration for a year getting them to work. I phoned people
who were selling them to find out why, and I communicated with people
on the web, everyone was having trouble getting them to work properly.
They took months to work properly, tho' I can't be sure how long
because I was trying different amps. Prominent top end and flabby
bass until broken in.
Bear in mind that the 63/989 is a very different animal from the 57.
I think the reason I didn't like the 63 was because everyone was
trying to use Quad II amps when I heard them. The best I heard them
was with 77 monoblocks.
I still have my 57's and get them out from time to time. I was
absolutely stunned when I first heard them, but anyone who thinks the
57 is better is deluding themselves or hasn't heard the 989 working
properly. The 57 is cheaper to get working because you don't need to
spend much to get a suitable amp.
Since I got my 989's working I have become a total recluse. I have a
stage at the end of my room with musicians on it, it is scary. The
problem with them is that many recordings are so bad that they become
unlistenable. My room isn't ideal really, not long enough, but they
still sound fabulous. It scares me to think what they might sound
like when I finally get a nice long room.
Life is short. There is only one chance. The 989's aren't cheap but
the performance is priceless. Quad haven't sold as many as they
expected.
And yes the Spendor SP100 do sound very similar, amazing for a box
speaker. But they will cost about the same.
Neil, buy some. Stretch yourself and get the 989's, but it will lead
to expense getting a suitable amp.
I think there's a huge amount of hype with hifi. I've tried highly
rated components and wondered what all the fuss is about. The 989 is
an outstanding and underrated product.
Perhaps you were just hearing how dull CD's can sound!!! Sound
shouldn't leap out into the room, there's a stage behind the speakers.
I had LS3/5a's for a long time, very sweet, but rather small in
scale. If you sell them to Hong Kong you could be well on the way to
989's!!! I couldn't believe what I got for mine.
Your preamp and amp might be OK on 989, but suggest power amp
wouldn't be good if you splash out on 989 ( Bear in mind that Peter
Walker had no time for the valve revival. I had to rethink my
position on power amps)

Regards
Dave
