[#3863] OTL for ESL Sorry, Dr John, having you being confused. I was referring to Dr King on his latest development. Dr King, when you are more free after trip, can I borrow your cable for a field trial at home?

[#3865] OTL for ESL I guess I have to rephrase my question: how would you recommended to burn in a 23 stepped attenuator in a faster pace?

[#3866] OTL for ESL dennis, the testing of the 27M as you said will be more likely after my july trip. if cp is o.k., i might leave the 27M at his place for a couple of weeks so that you guys can play with it. regarding the interconnect, let me think about it. see whether i can create a couple of variations just for your passive. how long do you need them to be? shorter the better i would think. do you need to burn-in a switch? i've no idae.

[#3869] OTL for ESL Dear King, It's great for such wonderful arrnagement. Regarding cable length. any length not shorter than 12" is fine. Any plan yet to market the cable under the your brand?

[#3870] OTL for ESL Regarding cable length. any length not shorter than 12" is fine. Any plan yet to market the cable under the your brand? ----------------------------------------------------- o.k. i make a pair of 1.5 ft long. this is a different configuration than my normal interconnect. i will try to trade off a bit of noise for lower capacitance. hopefully much lower than your kimber. let's see how well it works.

[#3871] OTL for ESL Powercord, I guess you must mouth watering after reading our coming next activity on new cable and preamp shoot-out. I also wish to try your recommended Transcendent but quite different to borrow one set around. I think we must wait for your return to get hold the US amp.

[#3872] OTL for ESL I wish to share some of my new listening experience after replacing my reference QUAD II/22 with TVC/Graaf OTL. Please bear in mind the newly received TVC with complete new wiring internal network inside has only been running in for several hours. CONFIGURATION first TVC - a pair of 20 stepped S&B TX-102 copper transformers, pure silver connection wiring, gold on silver Seidon selector and volume control switches. Non magnetic Django case and Cardas connectors (Most key TVC components are from Dr King and I hope he won't cruelly take them back) OTL - Graaf GM20, 20 watt per channel Sources - Linn Linto phono using Troika MC, Mcintosh MR71 tuner, Chinese DVD disk Speakers - as usually, the 15 ohm ESL57, will try LS3/5s later, let ESL die first in case any electrical problem. New experience with TVC/OTL but sujective 1. Much more musical details and harmonics in particular at low frequency range. Not necessarily louder. My ESL generates dust cover flattering noise with low frequency. Now I found my ESL's dust cover flattering problem become more severe even at ordinary sound level. I guess this is a hint of much more low frequency information than before. The TVC/OTL is very impressive and informative, worths every dollar I spent. 2. Quite obvious improvement in sound stage, wider and deeper the sound stage I found. I am not sure whether this is the effect of ESL re-positioning. 3. Unless for some ad hoc excitment or occasional hifi effect, It seems to me that I am now keep listening at a lower volume level most of the time than before . 4. Lower noise level. Very quiet indeed and I think the TVC attributes most in this area. My feeling is that the music background becomes darker. 5. The tonel balance of the system changes slightly. The female vocal appears 3 years younger. 三年? another coincidence? 6, The instrument become sharper and more focus. Not sure the hardware of speaker re-placement. 7. My desmetic helper and all other family members told me they prefer to the new sounds Every minor improvement counts. Based on the above subjective observations, I guess I have made some improvement to my system. I shall report again after 150 hours TVC burn in period. Stay tuned as I shall find out the most contributing component.

[#3873] OTL for ESL dkyyu, Congratulations that you are happy with your new toys and found substantial improvements. If your family also find them better, it must be true as they have the most impartial and fresh ears. I'm still fiddling with the computer in office in this hour of the day as my car broke down in the car park and I'm still waiting for the tow truck.

[#3874] OTL for ESL Please bear in mind the newly received TVC with complete new wiring internal network inside has only been running in for several hours. ----------------------------------------------------- did you change the wiring as well? the original wires are all teflon coated silver wire. they are not too bad.

[#3875] OTL for ESL Doctor, I had no choice to change the 6" connection cable between selector and RCA plugs because they were too short for the Django case. I also have to replace the dual selector controller by Seidon because the prepared metal case only provides two factory-drilled holes to accept one volume and one selector switch. I knew the cable are precious pure silver and the dual seclectors are high-end, so I plan to put them in another DIY shunt type passive preamp project given your TVA sounds quite nice to me.

[#3876] OTL for ESL Dennis, I learnt that Dr. King used pure silver wire internal wire and Cardas RCAs, which are high-end and high quality! Glad that you have marked improvement again!

[#3878] OTL for ESL Dear Richard, Except the dual selectors and the four silver wires connecting to the Cardas, the 4 Cardas RCA and 2 S&B are all stuck into the case. I also need to build a high quality resistive passive pre for alternative comparison, so I am planning to put the selectors and silver into my second passive pre. Dr Hon and Dr King and CP, Any suggestion on a simplest but good sounding shunt type pe-amp schemetic for a DIY beginner? CP, Any advice why the American installed a Caddock resistor along the signal path of the Axiom passive pre-amp?

[#3879] OTL for ESL I had no choice to change the 6" connection cable between selector and RCA plugs because they were too short for the Django case. I also have to replace the dual selector controller by Seidon because the prepared metal case only provides two factory-drilled holes to accept one volume and one selector switch. ---------------------------------------------------- the reason why the wires are so short is that i used extenders on all three switches. it is such a shame that you couldn't get brian to use extenders for your passive. Any suggestion on a simplest but good sounding shunt type pe-amp schemetic for a DIY beginner? ------------------------------------------------ there is no magic. you can use any schematic in the internet. use a small series resistor. i used caddock before but it is not as good as other resistors i tried on a series connection. the blue 27M used a rhopoint wirewound and i found them quite nice. i still have a pair of 50K if you want to try. here is the link http://hk.farnell.com/jsp/Passive+Components/Resistors,+Thermistors+&+Potentiometers/RHOPOINT/8G16D+100K/displayProduct.jsp?sku=9622110

[#3881] New Pork Dennis, Morning! Sometimes a new toy would cloud over the reason of a undesirable sound, instead of unveiling. Honestly, instead of needing a 2nd passive-pre for comparison with the 1st passive-pre, it should be hiring of "new ears" (生耳) to compare the new toy (TVC) with the previous QUAD 22. If a passive-pre improves charity but drags back dynamics or anything in the sound, it does not unveil any hiden reason, and your QUAD 22 is not to blame. In this way, it saves unnecessary spendings (if indeed unnecessary), and at at the same time, avoid being side-tracked. Just my 2 cents. Cheers!

[#3882] New Pork dear DJ dkyyu has a case of "New Pork" syndrome? Every time he has a new toy he proclaims its complete superiority. Where are the downsides that come with extended evaluations??? ____________________________________________ Dear DJ, I guess it's the common syndrome or obsession that makes us keep changing and buying new toys. afterall, no cure. Dear Richard, The passive TVC and OTL combo sounds touching to my heart. Luckily, I think the dynamic loss is not obvious indicating improper impedence matching between source and load is not severe in my case. I have a feeling, the OTL is born for ESL whilst the passive preamp is born for OTL. Result is encouraging so far and I wish to try out more on cable material/length, source type (ss/tube) etc. I hope to dig deeper in this direction and I've received tremendous support from dr King and dr HC Lee so far. When comparing to the newly serviced QUAD II/22, I did not notice any loss impairing my enjoyment. I am certain I hear and feel much much more signals in particular bass notes than before. When I put the passive TVC with QUAD II, they sound clearer and more pleasing to my family. Perhaps the magnetic TVC has something different or superior in nature to the common resistive based passive. Hence, I wish to go ahead to build a resistor-base passive pre to verify the difference between TVC and resistive base. I guess most system cannot accept passive pre probably suffering the impedence match problem between source and load. Incidentally, I am lucky as my ss Linn phono and tube OTL work pretty well together with a passive pre in between. Having said that, I believe the sound of TVC is not everyone's cup of tea. The active and passive pre are simply two extremes, love or hate. So I won't recommend passive to friends or others. They must hear it and decide for themself. When run in time is due, please be invited to come along with Gingers and Dr King for a cup of tea or a glass of wine/ beer again as well as giving your valuable advice. I inherited the TVC from doctor King and I wish he could make himself available to come along after his trip. I've also found some CD with quality recording now sounding more acceptable after switching to TVC and OTL. But tghe trade-off is that the poor recording ones sound more terrible than before. Feikeung, you may bring some CD to my place in next visit.
