It's a fixed output CDP, but the output level depends on the recording level as well. e.g. I only set to the level when playing this Romance de Amor.

i'm really puzzled. if it is a fixed output of 1.5v, 0 db on the cd will output 1.5v. even say on average your cd has 50% level signal, it will overdrive your modena. if 65W will blow your esl, what kind of power level do you think your esl can be pushed to. say 1/2 of that at 30W. so modena only required 300mv. if that is the case, you shouldn't really need to turn up the volume much. i don't get it.

i bet richard's 12.1 has attenuated down the input signal. if for an original 12.1, we are talking about 125mv for full output. that's a different game.

When I checked the recording level on my Revox reel to reel, if the peak (red zone) is 100%, the normal recording level is only about 10~15% or less, even for full swing in the high dynamics, it rarely goes beyond 60%. Does that mean anything to you?

I finally plugged the 27M to the V69a. It still delivers the full-bodied midrange of the V69a but the original gleaming treble of the 27M now seems lack-luster. The load is just too difficult to drive. This is the volume setting for the Phantom. For comparison, when using the TVC and V72 which has a fix gain of 34dB, I was using the -34dB level.

if you are talking about average, yes you are probably right except those chinese recordings. but for many cds, there are fair amount of swings. not likely going all way to 100% but 80% is common.
now i'm looking at the phantom of opera cd. the first cd, 'think of me' track. at about 24s, 3min and 4 min, the sections have level of 80% signal. at 3 min 14 sec, the signal actually peak close to 100%.
so i'm justing wondering, even listening to this track with setting you have on the 27M, it will definitely clip your modena for a fair number of sections.

600 ohms is very tough for the 27M. it is just not designed to drive that kind of load.
as i said about the cd level, i think the modena is not driving the esl probably. there is something wrong. is the modena working probably like factory checked etc.?

Ask rcwy or drwkng whether the 27M is affordable. Projecting from the price of the TVC you got from drwkng, you can probably get a steal of the world.

Dr. King, I had tried TVS vs. 400CX. Personally I do not like the former mainly because of its is lack of drive (dynamic) and clinical clean, It does not have the "color" or so-called emotional expression (my feel). Perhaps I should turn the input volume of my 12.1 to maximum but I do not like to hear the minor hiss hiss sound. So the compromise is 1/2 of input volume for 12.1; 9 o'clock volume set for 400cx/cx2 and cd variable output with remote control for convenience.

your 12.1 is not original, right. otherwise where does the input volume come from. with tvc, you shouldn't really hear any hiss though.

I wouldn't have the slightest doubt on the Modenas. They worked perfectly well with the Nagra, TVC and V72. And the volume settings of these preamps are more or less the same as with the V69a. So by elimination unless the ESLs are faulty which I doubt again with their performance.
