| [#4005] Boeing 7X7 aircrafts Patrick, You might be interested to note what happened week before last. Amid all the 787 roll-out hoopla, perhaps the coolest event went unnoticed. On Saturday night, Boeing had all of the 787 airline representatives at an event at the Museum of Flight. At 7:07 PM, an Omega Air Refueling Services 707 landed in front of the crowd (after taking off from Paine Field in Everrett). At 7:17, an AirTran 717 landed. This continued until 8:17 when an Air France 777-300ER landed. In the end, the 707,717,727,737,747,757,767, and 777 were lined up nose-to-tail on the taxiway. It is the first time Boeing has had every 7-series airplane in the same place (not counting the 787, which couldn't make the flight, of course). |

| [#4016] TVA meet BBA Today, I met the Eastern Electric (EE)'s BBA designer, Dieter, and EE's partner, Alan, introduced from Tim. To cut the story short, the BBA (buffer booster amp) from EE mates pretty well with my TVC in my system. What I liked most is that the BBA works effectively as a buffer amp as well as a booster bringing back all the missing harmonics to the system. Amazingly, its low carrying price tag makes it affordable to those new babies and obviously cheapie like me who wish to step his first leg in the high-end audiophile world without costing arm and a leg. Tim is kind enough to leave BBA behind for my prolonged audition after their visit today. I've found best result using the TVC as volume control outputting to the unattenuated BAA using 3/5 full gain, then feeding into my Graaf GM20. Tim, after you left, I'd experienced more with the gain control and I finally settled on a lower gain level at 1:30. I guess putting the BBA between the source and TVC is not a bad idea either. Apparently, the TVC+BBA becomes an active preamp (the BBA provides an in-built pot attenuator but I still much prefer to my TVC). While the TVA giving me all the transparency I am longing for, the BBA with its variable gain control and impedance matching capability (it is designed to drive the world's most difficult amp V69) opens up the sound stage and restores all the missing harmonics in my system. It sounds like best of two world. Any trade-off you may question? I am NOT certain yet, so let me find out more in the coming week. |

With the BBA gain set at 1:30 and attenuator fully turned off, what is the level you set for the TVC? |

| [#4019] TVA meet BBA CP, My inital impression for sharing: To me and Patrick, the performance of S&B TX-102 seems higher than the in-built resistive base ALP pot in BBA. I switched between the single BBA and TVC+BBA for comparison by Patrick, we both appreciated the TVC more as volume control but not alone. Frankly speaking, it's a matter about costing, a pair of TX-102 transformers alone is almost more expensive than the BBA. I heard Tim has future plan to design and roll out a delux BBA version using permalloy TVA or stepped attenuators as volume control. We first listening to the TVC alone, well, the single TVC is on the lean side, a bit dried lacking some second and third harmonics after later A/B comparison. Then we tried the following config: phono -＞ BBA -＞ TVC -＞ GM20 phono -＞ TVC -＞ BBA -＞ GM20 phono -＞ BBA -＞ GM20 As there were quite a numbers of visitors and I am new to the BBA, I could not tell the result difference between BBA -＞ TVC and TVC -＞ BBA. But surely to me and Patrick, the TVC+BBA union is more superior to the single TVC or single BBA. The BBA only provides one input and one output. Since I need 3 inputs for 3 different sources, that's why I chose to place the TVC in front of BBA to accept more input. Having said that, the knowledgeable designer, Dieter, recommends also trying the other way round, that is placing the BBA in front of the TVC. Anyway, he suggests there is no fixed rule and we should try out more config. May I suggest you also try the BBA with your V69 and Music First. So much fun and I heard much improvement in my place. For normal and sufficient sound level, I turned my TVC to 11 o'clock when setting the gain to 1:30 am. I have to remind you that the gain control will change the tonal balance. In my system, we heard overloading and it started bright sounding when setting to 3:00am with TVC voulme pointing to 9 or 10 o'clock. When gain control is below 12:00, the sound of the system reset and turn dark. |

| [#4020] TVA meet BBA CP, There is no volume control by-pass provided in the BBA. We simply switched the BBA's volume to the maxi level serving as volume by-pass when we used the TVC as volume control. I heard the TX-102 is much superior than the blue ALP POT in BBA as volume control. But the BBA wins in two major areas: 1) impedance matching. Not only can it drive your V69 or my passive pre well. I was told it can even improve on some active pre particularly when pre and map are not in same brand suit 2) variable gain control to provide the flexibililty when matching different power amp. Careful, tone change and user needs to find out the optimal point. The stock tubes are the ordinary sounding ones. We listened to the higher quality tubes loaned from Alan all the way through. The sound quality dropped significantly after Tim unplugged out Alan's demo tubes from the BBA. Ah, I also heard a big improvement after replacing the stock 6922 with some German 6922 ( not sure whether Lorenz or Valvo) in Graaf as suggested by Dieter. Now I shall be busy to find out my 4 gold-pin Siemens E88CC. |

| [#4021] TVA meet BBA Dennis, It is in fact quite a nice set up and it would be interesting to compare it with the Nagra PLP. The best part I like the Nagra is its variable gain with the very accurate modulometer which helps to set the gain to the optimum level easily, and as you said, the tone really changes with different settings. The BBA works more or less the same and it will be a comparison between tube rectification and battery dc supply. If the BBA + TVC would be comparable to the Nagra it would be a big bargain for the performance. The Nagra has an input impedance of ＞100kOhm and an output impedance of 60Ohm only which enables it to drive 600Ohm without a problem. The spec. of the BBA from the internet is somewhat strange which has an output impedance much higher than this and I really doubt its matching capability; Tim or Dieter may care to enlighten me on the aspect. The gain of the Nagra is presumably higher than the BBA of 18dB. When comparing the Nagra, 27M and V72, I actually find the higher the gain the better, even though you will have to attentuate the output signal more. The higher gain just gives the music more slam and immediacy. The V72 which has a 34dB gain swept all the others out in this department. But recently I further compared them to a V76 which has a variable gain from 12dB to 80dB! When I set the gain to 34dB which is the same as the V72, their difference is hardly noticeable. But when I set the V76 to 40dB, the slam is even more prominent without loss of details or becoming coarse. I cannot set the gain higher as then the required attenuation will be too much. It's an interesting experiment and I think might shed some light to our dear designers. |

| [#4022] TVC meet BBA Dennis, Thank you for your verbal report. I can feel your ecstasy with the BBA/TVC performance. I do have some NOS TFK ECL82 as I have modified one TFK S81 driving TFK horn speakers in my study. The ECL82 is an excellent tube especially good at the high freq. range. I'm not sure whether I have available 6X4, seems I do have some Fisher 6X4. I'll search and let you know. The ultimate challenge for the BBA got to be at my place as it will be up against the 27M, Nagra, Music First TVC, V72 and V76, driving some of the best power amps like Modena, V73 and V69a. |
