[#4128] ESL I went to the Hyatt's show around 3:30pm yesterday with Patrick mainly to visit the King's electrostatics speaker. We also met some old faces and nice people there. Well, the show was not as grand as the one next door held in the exhibition centre. I did not see Kris and Keikeung. Perhaps, they would make their visit today. Kris and Limage, Yoda and Conde are waiting for your arrival in King's showroom. Hurry up after your yumcha party. My first impression with the King's Emperor was interesting especially when they pulled out the AC plug from the ESL. Yes, their ESL can run in battery mode simply by pulling the power cord out. The ESL sounds dynamic with the power cord attached whilst retaining more details but lacks in dynamic when operates in unplugged mode. To my ears, with very little acoutic treatment in the show hall, the Emperor ESL sounds more alike to Maggie than my familiar sound QUAD ESL. I am afraid the sound from Emperor is not as refined as QUAD 57 nor 63 yet but certainly louder than any QUAD ESL. On the other hand, the Maggie 3.5 I heard in Limage's place possess more musical details than the Emperor. I guess the Emperor is designed for those who look dynamic and powerful sound, perhaps a rematch in other suitable room is badly needed. I would be most interested in hearing their smaller models such as King and Prince . I hope they would allow us a group visit later this year.

[#4129] ESL Ah, I forgot to tell: The King's people are using low cost MIC Jolida amp and DIY preamp to drive the ESL. Nor they were using hign-end source in the show. Please bear with these two concerns when audition the King's ESLs in the showroom.

[#4131] ESL D-class? I saw them using 4 of the Jolida amps yesterday lunch time but not with the small D-class boxes. That ceiling was very bad - stand under the concave, clap your hands and you'll see why. Some mid range was lost because of that. They later moved the speakers towards each other by about one inch each and that helped a lot. Soundproofing was slightly disappointing - the sidewalls were only partition walls. Sometimes I could here The Sound Chamber next door when quiet. Nevertheless, the room was quite popular with full room for several tracks each at many occassions. Would have loved to stay for longer but had to leave for Shenzhen.

[#4132] ESL Dear two Richards, that are rcwy and richardlai, My opinion is that they should use a better source and place their speaker in a better acoustic room. I believe the King's ESL has potential but not under the condition in an exhibition hall. Anyway I quite enjoyed their ESL and will revisit their ESL soon. Any comment on King's ESL sound from you, gentlemen? Dear Linage and Feikeung, Did you make it to King's room under the heavy rainstorm? I really wish to hear your comments. I prefer to the size and look of the smaller "King" model although it was there for silent display. Hope to hear this model. I also met a senior, Mr Liu廖先生, in King's room who's quite proud of using the double ESL57 and all sorts of legendary gears since 50s. He appears very actively, quite willing to share out his experience with everyone. He left so early once hoisting of typhoon signal 8. I wish I could meet him again in King's office soon.

[#4133] ESL Dennis, Yes, both feikeung and I did audition the giant panels from King when signal No. 8 was well in force. Performance was rather disappointing, being very much towards the lean side on tonality and entirely lacking in definition. It was in fact exactly what anti-esl people would expect from box-less speakers. I know we cannot blame the speakers since it is well nigh impossible to find good sound under exhibition conditions.

[#4134] ESL Thanks a million for sharing, dear Limage, It's indeed a most difficult task to design a good speaker. Notwithstanding the results from the exhibition hall, the King's people had displayed their enthusiasm and efforst in electrostatics. I hope their ESL will perform better in their own showroom.

[#4138] ESL I went to this "Return to Motherland" anniversary concert organised by the national conservatories alumni association in Hong Kong last evening. I think it is actually organized by the Central Government Liaison Office. I always find attending these celebration events a waste a time but as it is a concert, I might as well go and have a look. I was surprised how amateurish the event was organized. The standard varies by a huge extent. Most of the performers were just showing off their "skills" without an iota amount of artistic content. ![]()

[#4139] ESL Nontheless, some of the performers were actually quite good whose performances I have never come across. This one is a lyric tenor who has a beautiful voice and is able to project his voice easier to the whole concert hall even at soft passages. He is the father of Tse Ning, the ex-Miss Hong Kong. He himself quite a good looking man at this age. ![]()

[#4140] ESL The other good one is this lady who is now a professor in the APA. These 2 might be the only performances that I enjoyed for the entire evening. There were unfortunately 10 other rubbish performances that I suffered. ![]()

[#4141] ESL Notwithstanding how excellent the 27M is, my last attempt to replace the V72 with the 27M driving the V69 remains a fail one. My determination to quash the V72 out of the way lies here : active and passive original faders and the last resort - the Klangfilm 6S Ela 2154. ![]()

[#4143] ESL CP, I understand that the Siemens ELa2154 was designed as a pre-amp to amplify/equalised the audio signal stored alongside the film strip and to feed the equalised/amplified signal to Siemens ELa cinema power amp. Therefore, it would not have the facility to interfact with a German studio power amp with the 600ohm input such as the V69. On the other hand, I understand the 2154 may be modified into a Phono pre-amp for LP.
