[#404] QUAD ESL Albertino, Thank you for your offer. You are indeed very kind. Yes, I'm a Quad II owner and in fact Quad II is the amp I feel most comfortable with pairing with ESL, because it is not going to damage the ESL no matter how I try to abuse the speakers. I find so much fun with the ESL that I just want to exploit its potential with different amps, and of course the last 2 I would try are the V73 and TL12.1. The ESL is so revealing that so far I find different amp have its own merit when playing different types of music. Even the Scott 299 which must be a class, if not a few classes, inferior to the M9, MC240 etc., has its merit playing the "Persuasive Percussion". I clear remember I have a copy of the "persuasive percussion" when Gingers demonstrated it so very often. Eventually I dug it out from my archive and it is a LP. So my LP system is now at work, but it is a Dual CS505. The Linn is to be fine tuned and the Revox, which is a linear tracking one, I still don't know how to set the cartridge weight. BTW I'm still waiting for your separate power supply for my 1st generation Linn.

[#405] QUAD ESL Sorry, I got mixed up again. I am waiting for Edmond's separate power supply.

[#406] QUAD ESL Dear cp, I have already raised the request to Choice hifi. I guess they will reply in few days. For your information. Just for sharing. I have tried several modern pre-amp including the Matisse reference pre-amp with QUAD II but what a disaster!! Best to my experience, the QUAD II needs its own pre-amp QUAD 22 to exploit its full potential. There may be few other pre-amp around to match well with QUAD II, but I don't know yet. Tim will tell you to try the Fisher.

[#407] QUAD ESL Dear CP and ESL user, I think I need to report some interesting observation this afternoon. I spread my ESL further apart and they are now 6'4'' centre to centre. I'd reduced the toe-in angle accidentally and the sound stage appeared open more up, improving the stage to a more satisfying height. I guess I would try more experiment on toe-in angle with more disc this Saturday.

[#408] QUAD ESL Today I sent the stock feet to a carpenter to extend those to 14". -------------------------------------- CP, A question please. How do you come up with the length of the stock feet of 14" ? Since the length of the stock feet is not adjustable, Is there anyway you can adjust the height after the extended stock feet is intalled?

[#409] QUAD ESL Patrick, Just by experiment. I tried the stock feet as well as the One Thing Audio stand. And I also raised the height from the One Thing stand. I best result I have so far is 14" in my environment. The front legs are 14" and the rear leg 14-1/2" to achieve the tilt. This is only supposed to be a prototype. If this is successful, then I will make it permanent with good wood.

[#410] QUAD ESL Just by experiment. ----------------- That makes sense! I guess you can raise the height by putting masonry blocks under the front feets, and adjust the tilting angel by putting some coins under the rear feet like what Dennis is doing.

[#411] QUAD ESL Patrick, That is exactly what I will do. Since I still cannot get a carpenter, the other option is if by chance you know someone who is going to throw away their wooden chairs, let me know. I will just cut their legs and start doing some diy.

[#412] QUAD ESL someone who is going to throw away their wooden chairs ------------------------- Good idea!!! I will keep an eye on some dump sites near our apartment. It may take a while though. Some hardware store may sell these wooden legs. I remember I saw these wooden legs in all different sizes and length for sell in Home Depot in SF.

[#413] QUAD ESL I tested the SiemensV72/MaihakV73 combo with the ESL for 2 consecutive days and am quite surprised that they don't match at all. The sound is crystal clear with very extended high and low but somehow the sound stage is very flat with instruments playing on the panels but vocal becomes more recessed, just the opposite of the usual charm of the ESL. However, the V72/V73 works extremely well with 3/5a and BC1. I would consider them a serious competitor with the Leak 12.1 and that they should join the party of 12.1/25A and Rogers Williamson. ![]()

[#414] QUAD ESL Over the last 2 weeks I have tried to match the ESL with the following amps that I have and so far MC240 is my favourite. Quad II Leak Stereo 20 Leak TL25+ HH Scott 299D Fisher 500C Marantz 9 McIntosh MC240 The oustandings are Altec 1568a and Klangfilm ELA 2805, both EL34 which I do not have very high exepctation.

[#416] QUAD ESL I tested the SiemensV72/MaihakV73 combo with the ESL for 2 consecutive days and am quite surprised that they don't match at all. ------------------------------------------------ From what I read on the HKTAC forum, the best match for ESL57 from the V-series amp should be the V81 with EL84 PP.

[#417] QUAD ESL Patrick, Your picture shows a QCII which is a mono preamp. The QC22 looks like this (the front unit, picture borrowed from Quad II thread). ![]()

[#418] QUAD ESL Tim, Got it. Unfortunately I don't have a V81. Have you tried to match with V502?
cpsjj 219.xxx.xxx.55 |

[#419] QUAD ESL Hi, Patrick, CP is correct. The pre-amp you showed us was mono, usually much cheaper than the stereo because user needs to buy a pair for stereo purpose. PS: We are watching the QUAD combo at reasonable price and condition for you. Dennis

[#420] QUAD ESL I actually have a pair of V81. But unfortunately, my ESL is in "incubation" due to lack of space at home and in VS.
