| [#4404] ESL During the auditioning of the Maggies when Gingers played the Turandot again, we had an argument on whether all operas have a stupid story, as advocated by limage. I hold a completely different opinion and I believe a lot of the more successful operas, in addition to their sublime music and enchanting arias, cause us to explore more deeply into the psychological, philosophical and moral implications of the characters, their actions and their statements, despite their simple but not stupid storylines. I have taken the simplest Don Giovanni as the example. Mozart and da Ponte created Don Giovanni based on the story of Don Juan. It is an opera of ideas and questions, has multiple meanings to any person who encounters it and instills new meanings and insights to even the same person when comes to it at different points in life or in different frames of mind. The opera has a subtitle 'Il Dissoluto Punito', meaning the dissolute punished. True the title character dies at the end and presumably goes to hell. But was Don Giovanni punished by a higher being or was he simply paying the wages of sin? Is it bravery that he refused to repent even at the threat of hell and damnation? Or can it be argued that Don Giovanni led a contended life and had no regrets when his time was up? Donna Anna is a noblewoman whose father is killed by Don Giovanni in a duel. Prior to this, she had her first sexual awakening thanks to the Don who unleashed her erotic feelings that were previously suppressed or undiscovered, albeit was a rape. Her most powerful sexual feelings are connected to a man who kills her father makes her life complicated, not the least that she was engaged to the loyal, coolheaded and dull Don Ottavia; an old story of a woman torn between the boyfriend type and the husband type. In the end, she puts off her wedding with Don Ottavia after the demise of Don Giovanni. Why? Donna Elvira is the woman seduced and abandoned. Yet her anger and efforts to revenge are portrayed as a comic relief from the high stakes of Donna Anna’s dilemma. While Donna Anna is on a downward spiral to inevitable unhappiness, Donna Elvira becomes stronger and more insightful. Towards the end of the opera, she says she feels pity for the Don. This can mean that she is a foolish pushover who doesn't learn from her own mistake, or can be interpreted as her sophistication has grown to a point that her anger has subsided and her ability to accept her circumstances and others' weaknesses has grown. In the end she vows to enter a convent which was a refuge in Spain for troubled women and occasionally it was where unwed pregnant women went. Could it be she was bearing the child of Giovanni? Leporello is continually abused by the Don and frequently complains of his lot, yet he has his own great brand of charm and humanity. Is he a loyal servant to an unworthy master or a cynical sycophant is not only subject to the interpretation of the audience but also the artist playing the role. The opera could have ended with the scene of Giovanni's decent to hell to impart an idea of the fear of God but that was not the intention of Mozart and da Ponte. They simply presented the characters and situations for us to consider, and did not attempt to push an agenda down our throat. We leave the opera with more questions about morals and human nature. Are the bad always punished and the virtuous rewarded? Are we better off living in fear than living an exciting life? Is fidelity desirable or even possible (cosi fan tutte)? Were Giovanni's pride and bravery laudable? How is it possible to love and admire someone despicable? These questions do not come from a stupid story. If you want to discuss more, Electra would be another interesting psychological puzzle. |
