| [#4546] QUAD ESL speaker Apart from Brahms' platonic lover, today is also the birthday of the father of dodecaphonism, or the twelve tone school - Arnold Schoenberg. I am not a keen supporter of serialism and I believe Schoenberg went overboard on this that even Mahler, who used to recognize him as a significant composer, could no longer understand him with his later works. I regard his later compositions as a kind of paper music, which looks beautiful on paper and which can be subject to the most fascinating analyses. The trouble is in actual performance the mind will not take in the carefully plotted relationships that the composer has written down. Intellectually we may know the last movement of a specific work is a retrograde of the first, i.e. it's the same but just played backwards, but the ears will not take it in even if the eye and mind will - kind of like describing what Dr. King does. :-) Schoenberg is a music theorist and dodecaphonism is the grammar of music, not music. As Couperin rightly put it: "just as there is a great distance between grammar and rhetoric delivery, there is an infinitely greater distance between musical notation and artistic performance."  |

| [#4552] QUAD ESL speaker We auditioned Dennis' most recent ESL57 with his Graaf 20 OTL power amp/ S & B transformers in Djano case passive pre and Linn LP12 front end today. All the panels of Dennis' ESL57 are original except one treble unit which came from a single donor ESL. Unlike his last pair which was refurbished by One Thing Audio, this pair sounds a lot better. The midrange is pure and the high frequency is open. The system has synergy, most people were impressed with the Graaf 20 power amp driving the ESL, being very crisp and transparent. Now I understand why even Tim Yung, being a die hard vintage fan, rates the Graaf OTL highly. Although there is a slight mismatch in the output levels of the two ESL, Dennis is very happy with the sound which is the most important thing. I am sure master Patrick will sort out the mismatch easily by swapping the panels, then Dennis's system will be nearly perfect :) We also listened to the Graaf driving some Rogers LS3/5a. The sound was simply superb, the high frequency is very clear & extended and the bass is deep with impact. Again the synergy is just perfect. There is no doubt that the Graaf and ESL57 are 5 star products. Whether you like vintage or modern components, it is a pleasure to audition them today. Thanks to Dennis for the noodle and egg desert. The noodle sauce was very nice, even though the fat from the pig's trotter was a bit heavy for my delicate stomach :) Hon |

We love tranparency, that's the similarity what I could have found in Nagra PLP, S&B TVC and yours 27M. Hon, Thanks to our ESL master Patrick, I think what you heard today is just a pair of normal ESL being properly restored. It sounds no different to other healthy ESL but unfortunately most ESL are aged and arch...... I hope you would acquire another pair in due course strictly for your private use (quote from L.....). Gingers and Colin, Welcomed. I think the audiomaster has its own charisma driving the ESL pretty well than most other amp I've known. In my opinion, it's a great amp for ESL and LS3/5s, should sweep away hundreds of other good sounding amp on earth. And I think they matched exceptionally well with the passive TVC probably due to its high input gain. With the provision of variable gain controls, have you tried connecting them directly to CD? I hope my LS3/5s did not let Gingers (the king of 3/5s) down, in particular facing Limage head to head. |
