The Meridian G08 CDP brought along by feikeung proved to be an excellent program source for today's auditioning. It was unbelievably awful when first plugged in, much to my chagrin that I recommended it earlier to Patrick. Feikeung had used it for not more than a few hours after he had acquired it and had put it aside ever since, like many of his toys, or women in that matter. The G08 was a completely different machine when we came back after lunch. Again feikeung genereously left it to Patrick to play around. I have a feeling that Patrick is going to keep it if he would spend more time on it comparing with his Proceed. And I suggest Dennis should be given the opportunity to try it, if he is not adamant on LP as the only viable source, so he can come to realize that some CDs can actually sound better than LP if played on a worthwhile CDP and that there are now music that shouldn't be missed but are not available on LP anymore.

It looks like all of you had a nice ESL party in Patrick's place. It's a pity I wasn't there.

When I listened to Patrick's ESL63 just before he changed the wiring, they were simply superb. The vocal is one of the best I have ever heard. The ESL63 is a bit leaner than the ESL57. The ESL57's midrange is warmer and fuller, but the treble is less extended than the ESL63.

Regarding Meridian CD player, I have been using a Meridian 507 CD player for a few years. I don't intend to change it. I had lower model Naim CD players in the past which I found too coloured and unrefined. The 507 is very detailed and neutral which others may find it a bit boring. If Patrick keeps the GO8, I'd like to hear it when I am back in a few months time.

Dear gentlemen,

Glad you enjoyed a nice day in Patrick's private show room.

I did turn up two days earlier comparing the two ESL just between me and Patrick. The 63 sounds marvellous with well extended bass and treble but still lacks the magic and glory only found in 57. Realism, I think that what I've found 57 edging over 63. I tend to follow Feikeung's ranking of his best 3 favourite speakers.

CD closes to LP? I hope someday it will come true soon such that I can sell off my vinyl collection for more space.

Feikeung changed his mind today. He is the first to second the opinion that the 63 won by miles; and yes, he did maintain that the 57 has a slight margin on an infinitesimally narrow band in the frequency spectrum.

That is an urge for perfection, nothing to complain. But in my opinion, that has gone beyond the threshold of the law of diminishing return and I will spend the amount for another source of happiness.

See, he was seriously thinking whether his room is good for esl63 or not :-)

He told me that there is nothing to worry about the mid to high as this was a born advantage of an esl. He was much concerned for the mid bass to low of the esl63.

Finally Esl63 passed with a credit, at least a credit :-)

Waiting to see how limage digs out all the potential of the esl63 :-)

Elephant's tusk, or ivory as commonly known, is now a useless commodity after trading is banned. Canine tooth, or dogtooth, remains for so many years the most lovable feature of Japanese gals. Canine teeth are perhaps the most functional teeth in a canine's jaw and are in many cases, used generically or metaphorically, a lethal weapon.

BTW, my son does have a small shirt exactly like that which is for his gingerbread man.

will certainly borrow the esl 63 back and have an a/b comparison with my 57 before drawing a conclusion.

Over the long lunch yesterday, we mourned on the extinction of the heldentenor species and touched lightly on the subject whether there are any more tenors left after Pavarotti. We ended up arguing, as usual, whether Domingo or Pavarotti is the greater singer.

Over the 70's, the 2 best tenors in the world were, by common consent, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Pavarotti was unleashing the most ravishingly beautiful lyric sound since the days of Beniamino Gigli. Domingo, who had a bigger voice, was making connoisseurs talk in terms of Jussi Bjoerling. There was no real competition, both had their areas clearly defined, even if their repertories did impinge on certain operas. Toward the 1980's, Pavarotti began taking on heavier roles, giving concerts at unprecedented fees and was a central figure in a media blitz that made his name a household word. He became known as the World's Greatest Tenor. Domingo did not like that at all, of course. One good reason was that he was the world's greatest tenor and, among professionals, generally accepted as such. He had always maintained a very high norm, going along year after year with no discernible deterioration in his powerful organ; whereas Pavarotti, in assuming such roles as Radames, was not doing his voice any good. The former lyric velvet was replaced with a frequently hard and even strained sound, and the exciting high notes were gone. In the minds of the experts there was no doubt about the comparative merits of the 2 singers. Domingo was a much more valuable person to have around an opera house. In addition to being a splendid vocalist, he was a fine all round musician – an expert pianist and a competent conductor. He had an immense repertory that ranged from lyric roles to such dramatic ones as Otello. He was tall, well-built and macho. With so very few major tenors around, he was a giant.

Yet it was Pavarotti who captured the public imagination. He had the talent to begin with, of course. He also had a kind of outgoing, generous personality that the more reserved Domingo lacked. And if Domingo was macho, Pavarotti was sexy. There was one significant difference between Pavarotti and Domingo – charisma! When Domingo walked on stage, he demanded respect. When Pavarotti walked on stage, he demanded, and received, love and adoration. When Pavarotti was getting all the headlines and media attention, Domingo had enough in the early 1980's and started to make his move to become the kind of public figure that Pavarotti was. He engaged Pavarotti in a publicity battle and started aiming at the popular market. His joint venture with John Denver was a huge success. With Julie Andrews he made a film of the Merry Widow. He hit the TV circuit, appearing in guest shows and commercials. Sadly, it seemed it had become an idée fixe with him, not to be the greatest singer, not to be the greatest vocal stylist, but to be the most famous. It was a major attempt on Domingo's part but there was almost unanimous agreement that he failed to beat Pavarotti in this area. So up until his death, Pavarotti continued to hold his position as the vocal superstar of superstars and Domingo continued to be the most admired workhorse of opera singers and the best all round performer in the business. Nobody of equal stature or audience appeal seemed to be coming up to challenge them. German, French, English or American tenor stars seemed to be non-existent; there are some good ones around but good ones do not make superstars! Now that Pavarotti has passed away and Domingo 66, who else do we turn to and what will happen to the art of singing in the tenors camp?

I need an excuse to bring along my Leak TL/12.1, Leak TL/25A, Leak TL/50 and Audiomaster 11A to Sai Kung :-)

I don't think my toys can tame the Magnepan but .......................... for ESL63, my toys bleeds the same pure UK blood as 63 :-)
