| [#4805] QUAD ESL 63 speaker http://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/416/ . Gordon Holt & Various, September, 1983 Warning to Purists: Despite certain qualities about the ESL-63 speakers which you will probably like, Quad equipment is not designed primarily for audiophiles, but for serious-music (call that "classical") listeners who play records more for musical enjoyment than for the sound. Quad's loudspeakers do not reproduce very deep bass and will not play at aurally traumatizing volume levels, and Quad's preamplifier is compromised through the addition of tone controls and filters, all for the purpose of making old, mediocre, and/or worn recordings sound as listenable as possible. |

| [#4807] QUAD ESL 63 speaker Sorry gingers, I was out all day fishing and did not come back until evening. Yes, I do have ginger bread and ginger bread houses as seasonal highlights during X'mas. They are very much welcome by Westerners. |

| [#4808] QUAD ESL 63 speaker This Andy Nehan's place you posted looks very much like Patrick's. Incidentally he also has his speakers jacked up substantially from the floor. It is likely that we share the same line of thought. |

Gingers, as an Easterner, will like to audition it one day :-) Of course, my turn to be a host :-) ![]() |

| [#4810] QUAD ESL 63 speaker Dear All, As soon as the minor anomaly of feikeung’s ESL63 is fully resolved, it would be the time for us to arrange the hottest combat of the century: ESL63 Vs Maggie at no other place than the mythical colosseum in Sai Kung. Speaking on behalf of Maggie the whore, the ESL63 looks like one formidable challenger not be taken too lightly. Maggie has been looking for years in vain this worthy challenger and she is now very anxious to meet one with full gusto. |

However, for the vocal, both female & male, the tone can be a challenge :-) If limage can keep a pair of LS3/5A, why not include a pair of 63?? ![]() |

| [#4814] QUAD ESL 63 speaker From mid-range upwards, the electrostatics are essentially peerless provided of course the program source is up to standard. What remains is how effective its mid-bass is allowed to propagate or more appropriately, to blossom. Then you are going to have the best of both worlds — full bodied mid-range that is at once airy , transparent and yet full of weight and gravity. Most electrostatic freaks unfortunately do not have much success with this mid-bass definition and eventually they get so used to the lean sound that they believe electrostatics should all sound the way they are. The lack of bass being mistaken for clean bass becomes very much the norm which deplorably also forms the focus of attack by anti-electrostatic proponents. I believe good speakers, regardless of design, should all sound familiar in the same way that live music is familiar to every one of us. Now this ESL63 is able to demonstrate to us how closely the electrostatic could do to reproduce the real thing in the right ambience. |

Maggie has been looking for years in vain this worthy challenger and she is now very anxious to meet one with full gusto. --------------------------------------------- Patrick Do you have the similar thinking for your CD3400? http://www.stereophile.com/cdplayers/480/ Speaking on behalf of CD-3400 the cute, the G08 looks like one formidable challenger not be taken too lightly. CD-3400 has been looking for years in vain this worthy challenger and she is now very anxious to meet one with full gusto. See the review :-) esl63 was mentioned!! http://www.stereophile.com/cdplayers/480/ Enjoy superb digital stereo on the go!" the box read. The CD-3400 features a 1-bit DAC, 8x-oversampling digital filter, programmable memory, and digital out (which I haven't been able to use yet, because I lack the necessary cable with a digital mini-plug on one end). It's got a variable output for headphones, plus a fixed-volume line out. The player includes a cable for hooking up to your preamp, but not one for connecting the player to your processor. Nor does it include an AC adapter or four AA batteries. A cheesy carrying case is included. I hooked up the CD-3400 to my main system, which consists of a B&K Pro 10 preamp (latest production run), an Electrocompaniet AW20 anniversary-edition amplifier, and my pair of Quad ESL-63 USA monitors. ![]() |

Today is our great national day, thanks for the holiday, and the birthday of Paul Dukas - the French composer who made this famous "Mickey Mouse music". | [#4820] QUAD ESL 63 speaker It seems that copy and paste has become a fad here and as a neophyte of the sorcery, I might have to follow suit and practise this copying and pasting the "quotable quotes" of the supremo. An exercise : I must have taken limage TOO LIGHTLY. With so many people hypnotically revering him to the extent of idolatry, he must be more FORMIDABLE than simply a sorcerer. A hunch during yumcha prompted the realization that the name "li-ivan" sounded so similar to "Leviathan", an other name of Satan, a sea monster in the Bible. Yes, the sailor man, one who goes nowhere but the sea, does nothing but fishing. Isn't this a Revelation? I have BEEN LOOKING FOR YEARS IN VAIN to find my true god and suddenly realize that he keeps popping up in front of me. Rather than settling as the sorcerer's apprentice, I must now proudly declare myself "the Devil's Disciple" and am ANXIOUS TO MEETING my idol WITH FULL GUSTO. ![]() |

| [#4821] QUAD ESL 63 speaker Thanks gentleman for coming to my ESL63 music session on Saturday with planteous beautiful CDs. I am glad you appreciated the natural sound and the unique musical charateristic of ESL. I would like to thank you all for your acknowledgement of my effort in this 63 restoration project which is truly very encouraging. Now I have full confidence in restoration of 63 and shall carry on with more future projects using the same specifications. I have already remounted the bass panel I blown a day before our music session. That happened during the last stage of my torture test on Feikeung's ESL63. The speaker survived all sorts of music playing in very loud sound volumn except the the last CD track No. 2 of "ghost 太鼓". The speaker clipped a couple times and after that, one of the bass panel started to produce a ticking and some times fizzing noise, it sounded like there was high volt electro discharging. The symptom continued even I have reduced the resistance of the diaphragm to 500megaohms. I know that diaphragm has gone and I have to redo that panel. So I temporary installed it back for the party. Now I know it is a good way to kill a panel for playing drum beating in very loud sound volumn. The ESL63 should be ready in a couple of days. With the original owner, Feikeung and our adminstrator CP's consent, DW is the 1st member requested a loan for a day or 2. Ginger is the 2nd one perhaps on loan for a few days. and then it will be transferred to limage's music studio for fine tune and final preperation for the big event against the "whore". Despite all the favourable feedbacks you gentlemen input on the 63, my heart is still with the 57 for its unique midrange and warmth tonal quality. Thanks to Feikeung's generosity for loaning me his G08 CD player. Enjoy!!! |

| [#4823] Observation on King's Cable Dear King, I'd spent few days to burn in your 3rd generation cable, so called G3, and here's my observation 1) The G2 is not meeting the standard set by G1 2) G3, tonal balance is quite close to G1, but the shorter G1 seems sounding a bit more lively with better and more forward imaging. The difference between G1 and G3 is not vast. Both are very neutral. 3) Apparently the G3 sounds better when connecting between the source and TVC than other positions 4) My current rating G1 > G3 >>> G2. The performance of G1, G3 are better than all my copper IC whilst the G2 is only mediocre performing similar to other copper type. You must have done something right to your G1. I shall keep burning in your 3 cable for more observation. |
