| [#4845] QUAD ESL 63 speaker I was depressed for a while, still quite disturbed by the wide margin by which the 63 sounded better than the 57 on Saturday. And I tried to play the few CDs we played again using the same Graaf, just to compare by memory. It is quite evident that there is just no match in the bass region. The bass of the 63 is so much tauter and composed, if not even deeper that I now find the 57 sounds muddy for the first time. I used to feel that the 57's bass is not deep but clean enough. I have better resolution at my place, possibly because of a better preamp than the heavily modified Dynaco PAS3. When Jennifer Warnes sang, the tonal balance seemed to have shifted slightly upward compared to what I remember from the 63. The voice is equally rich but seems slightly thicker from the 63. I kind of like it from the 57. I also played the 昭君出塞 and boy, I think the 57 has a clear margin here, I can't stop playing the whole disc as against on Saturday I just felt exciting listening to that. On the vocal department, I think if the 63 can achieve 80% of what I got from the 57, it's going to smash the Maggie to pieces. But I'm not so sure, actually not confident, on other departments though. I hope with better positioning of the 63, this is really going to be the fight of the century against the Maggie. I do look forward to that "with full gusto".  |

| [#4846] QUAD ESL 63 speaker CP, Patrick told he had a project in mind to combine the 57 with 63. Would the outcome be a beauty or just a beast? Given 17 years of development history is rather lengthy enough, I don't understand why the 63 did not inherit the full quality of mid range from 57. My NOS ESL57 will arrive from Canada later this week. I shall arrange my 63 back and do a comparison between. |

I'm still puzzled by why the 57 would have a "better" mid range than the 63. Could this be the delay line circuit whereby the 63 reaps the benefit of a pseudo point source but loses on phase coherence? I believe there is too much work on the 57's bass panels, we may try 3 or 4 way in the crossover but then the size of the speaker would be a problem. Wouldn't it bw sensible to go back to the original thought that a separate frame for, say, 2 panels be made as woofer on each side and we modify the crossover to lessen the work on the original bass panels. What's your thought, Patrick? |

| [#4851] QUAD ESL 63 speaker Not only did we talk about Pavarotti and Domingo in the yumcha last Saturday, there was another prominent figure that we largely touched on, and that was none other than our dear old doctorjohn, whom hasn't "po tau" for a consecutive few days which is extremely rare. We all witnessed his excitement when he got his home return permit and how he enthusiastically entrusted his first night to feikeung. Feikeung's decadent life style is notoriously contagious and there is hearsay that DJ now resides in Shenzhen leading a convivial life with a courtesan. We heard so many terrible stories about people vanishing from this world in Shenzhen and do hope that DJ, if he happen to be browsing through this thread, could drop us a line to let us know that he is now sound and safe. |

| [#4852] QUAD ESL 63 speaker Hello, Gingers & cpsjj. Pls forgive me for jumping in. Pairing the 57 & 63 would be an interesting project. Go ahead & post the result. I recently had a demo from Master Yu (Alan Yee) of Excel in pairing the Magnepan MG 12 & MG 1.6. Great sound that neither one alone can come close. Speaker placement was innovative with MG 1.6 placed behind & inside the MG 12. |

I’ve been an avid follower of the Maggie sound, from the original MGIII to IIIa to 3.3 and then the present 3.5. Looking back, I can only assure you that the 3.5 is in fact nothing better than the original MG3, design or sonic wise. The “upgrade” was by no means due to my searching for perfection, but through persuasion by friends who chose to leave their deserted toys to my custody….. Eventually I had to pay. |

The Quad behaves much more gracefully and certainly not as devouring as the Maggie. But as you said, selecting amps for the Quad should always be done with caution, especially when paired, stacked or otherwise, not for power but mainly due to the very weird load of the 57. |

The MG IIIa has accompanied me for more than 10 years, & as you said, the 3.3 & 3.5 doesn't seem to sound better. But, for the new MG series, 12, 1.6, 3.6 & 20.1, they all seem to be more neutral together with a more punchy bass. Considering the upgrading cost & sonic improvement, guess I would wait for the next generation. |

| [#4863] QUAD ESL 63 speaker I was depressed for a while, still quite disturbed by the wide margin by which the 63 sounded better than the 57 on Saturday. ------------------------------------------------------ CP......The dissatisfaction of performance of the 57 on Saturday's shoot out has a great deal to do with the 57's speaker placement, room size, room acoustic treatment, how the speaker coupling with the envirronment etc.. I don't think we have done enough on that on Saturday. I have been listening to the same pair of 57 for more than 15 years. It should sound even better than in my magic cubicle. I am sure it will sound much better in a right set up. I've been busy replacing the damaged bass panel of Feikeung's 63 and now it is all done. I have tested the speaker all day long today with dustcover and metal grille on. I have also reverted the high grade wiring with the original wire of my own 63. Now it sounds as good as Feikeung's 63. Both speakers sound better and better over times. Dennis' 63 and the new 57 will arrive soon. I can't wait to listen to them especially the 63 to see how it sound comparing with the one I restored. Cheer!!! |

| [#4864] QUAD ESL 63 speaker Patrick, Your masterwork is highly appreciated. No doubt the 57 was not performing at its best last Saturday. But it is a fact as observed that under the same conditions, ie. same placement, same room and same gears, the 57 was not as enticing as the 63. It could be excused that an environment appropriate for the 63 may not apply to the 57, but at least we can conclude that the 63 is a much friendlier speaker to work with. I am a little cautious that Dennis' 63 can be plug and play as we are now quite sure that after all these years the adhesives between the stator and the grid would have disintegrated. Ignoring this fact, we will only damage the diaphragm. I just hope that the former owner have not been negligent and have damaged the diaphragm already. Sorry Dennis, I wrote as if we own the speakers together. We are just too concerned about every pair of Quad ESLs in Hong Kong. |
