[#543] Quad ESL Oh, how I love the big wheels. However, it is very cruel to a lot of people that hardly can we accommodate them.

[#544] Quad ESL JL........ interested to drop by on 30th this month. Dennis, Patrick, John et al will be coming. We will have V72/73 and 12.1 driving ESL57 and V72/69a driving BC1. Of course there could be numerous other impromptu combinations depending on the guests' hunch. The big wheels will be one of the sources; unfortunately I don't think I have the time and interest to properly set up the Linn by then.

[#545] Quad ESL Patrick............. Please note that my tape deck is the B77 Mk1 so it only plays tapes with speed 7.5ips or 15ips. If your tapes are 3.75ips, it won't work.

[#547] Quad ESL Patrick, I did an A/B comparison with the same "A Song for You" against CD. The sound is completely different, more so on the ESL as it is so revealing. Vocal becomes much thicker Both Wah and myself liked the tape but I'm not sure whether it is exactly your cup of tea as I understand you like sharper and brighter sound. Let's try it again on 30th, just for fun. The Revox is still a consumer product, if we think it is still not up to par, I still have a Nagra which is really for professional. ![]()

[#548] Quad ESL Before I was into german vintage amps, I played around with a lot of these german/swiss gadgets. I still use this Nagra SNN, a miniature open reel developed for the CIA in the JFK era. I smuggled it into concert halls and taped my son's performance. The sound is very good, more like historic live recordings as it is in mono. I remember it is featured in one of the James Bond movie, not sure whether it was From Russia with Love or Thunderball, something like that. ![]()

[#556] Quad ESL The following is my posting last year about the Double Quad: "I heard so many good comments about double Quad, so I tried very hard to get one. I was thinking, the regular single Quad is already that good, it probably be perfect if capable of reproducing deep bass and improving the sound dispersion. If that is the case, then I can entertain a group of my friend in my living room. In fact it was not quite so. I got a pair of Double Quad custom made by Radio People. Both the craftsmanship and the outlook was excellent. I listened to it for almost 6 months and finally gave it up. Reason: Too much bass ruin the mids and highs. The improved sound dispersion offsets the sound statege. I no longer can point out the exact position of the singer and each musical instructments. I also can no longer fell the voice created from the muscular throat of a human being. It just sound like a regular box speaker. I think your friend probably will go thru what I went thru. May be even harder due he make his own." I still think single quad performs much better as long as sound stage and transparency is concerned. Please note the main purpose of stacking up the Quad, for most people, is not to increase the output of sound but to improve the bass and the sound dispersion angle. My experience told me, you got the bass and a bigger sweet point. But you lose the "razor sharp" image of the soundstage. It's all depending on ones taste. Fish or steak?

[#557] Quad ESL Somebody posted this beautiful ESL57 on the 2nd hand market for sale. It was sold in a blink of an eye. I wonder who is the lucky guy. Will it be one of our brother in the Quad ESL forum? ![]()

[#558] Quad ESL Dennis, Patrick, Gingers et al When you come on Tuesday, would you "BYOD"; not bring you own drink though, but bring your own discs, as my repertoire might be quite different from yours. We can play around with TL12.1, V73 and V69a driving the ESL respectively, if Gingers would bring along his 12.1. We can easily switch to drive LS3/5a and BC1 with the same combinations. Of course we will also compare reel to reel with CD using B77 and Ayre D-1. Dennis mentioned that some of you might want to try horn load speakers. I have the Klipsch Heresy II there which I am not too fansy about but we can try, no harm. Might give me a different perspective. The full range L307 has been pushed to a corner to give space. Let me know if you also want to listen to it. If time permits, there is still a lot of toys we can play around. I certainly want to compare the TL12.1 with Radio Craftsmen C500 designed by Sid Smith. Both use KT66. See you guys then. What say if we have Thai lunch?

| [#561] Quad ESL CP, Any lunch arrangement is fine. We will make best to meet at downstair of your workshop around 1:30. Will call you, say 10 min before arrival at YL. The problem is that I only have poor collection of CD. I hope Patrick and Gingers can introduce me more good sounding ones. This is the best available day in recent months I can make to spend half day away from my home or office. So I'll be asking you lovely people to show me more of your collections. Hope you don't mind.
