[#565] Quad ESL Dear cp and Wah Gor, Good sound your place. Everybody including the two ESL experts were enjoying your ESL. Every of your effort by removing the cloth and adding the 14" inches legs certainly paid off. Should I call you two the "ESL man" now? Our feeling is that you can push up your ESL to a new height by removing the protection circuits installed by One Thing Audio as well. A easy job , just for your consideration. Hope to see your LP12 recovering soon. Thank you so much for spending your time and tolerating with us the whole day. Wah Gor, you were too kind changing the systems for us. See you soon Dennis

[#566] Quad ESL The V73/ESL57 combo was definitely a joy to listen to --- superb clarity, proper imagining, and the most important of all: the ability to allow you to enjoy music and feel at ease. Both the ESL57 and LS3/5A have their severe limitations. They have very limited dynamic range and are somewhat truncated at the frequency extremes --- not much output below 100Hz. The LS3/5A sounds constricted (I used to develop some kind of a migraine after prolonged listening). Yes, indeed, it sounds like a midget. The ESL57, however, sounds so natural (and neutral) that you tend to forget its short comings and just focus on the music being played. The V73/ESL57 combo may be rather limited in terms of the scope of music it’s capable of handling and it was very conspicuous when a piano CD was played. It could neither able to produce the timbre nor the texture of the piano, which probably required another octave below and an additional 9-12db of power. What the hell: For a 4-watt-rated amp, the V73 did an amazing job --- it had a tight grip on the ESL57 within its limitations, beyond which, clipping was clearly noticeable. Yesterday’s gathering was an eye opener for me. I have always had some kind of a bias against vintage gear. After listen to CJ’s pre-amp/transformer and V73 combo, I really have to realign my thinking. I learn something every day. http://www.purpleaudio.com/pdflib/telev73.pdf http://www.vintageking.com/site/files/images/v72.bmp

[#567] Quad ESL It was a happy together day yesterday. A bunch of good people gathered at my workshop and enjoyed a full half day of good music and nice chatting during lunch and dinner. Many thanks to Gingers bringing his well restored pair of TL12.1 to match the ESL, they definitely sounded more appealing to the crowd than the V69a yesterday when mated with the transformer-based passive preamp. Not as outstanding though with the Eico HF85. Alas we did not have enough time yesterday, otherwise we could try more mix and match with Fisher 80C and Scott 121C. I am relieved now that after prolonged auditioning, the 2 ESL experts, Patrick and Feikeung, were able to give me a tick for the ESL set up. Another test passed, hopefully with credit. The canto-opera in reel to reel format brought by Patrick attracted a lot of listeners into this type of music. They were very life-like and passionate, completely revealing the best points of ESL. The BC1 and V69a were not as appealing as expected. I have to blame that may be the V69a was the first to came in the same and we really did not give them enough time to warm up. I have experienced the V69a perform at least on par with the V73 if not better. Thanks again for Dennis to organize and bring the group to my chubby hole in the shanty town and giving me the critics I require to further improve.

The LS3/5A sounds constricted (I used to develop some kind of a migraine after prolonged listening). Yes, indeed, it sounds like a midget. -------------------------------------------------------- The observation of Feikeung hing is quite true for playing small speakers/low efficient speakers in a large workshop as in CP's. In a suitably sized room with reasonable acoustic condition, the sound from ESL57 and LS3/5A is stunning, the experience I have got. Excellent 3-D soundstage. No truncation. No midget! |

[#569] Quad ESL giving me the critics I require to further improve ----------------------------------------- One word only :-) Linn or LP :-) It was the first time I listened to the tape. Just a jaw drop shock. The sound was so good to my ears. Feikeung's comment LS3/5A sounds like a midget. Well, the workshop is relative bigger. John ![]()

[#570] Quad ESL Well certainly LP is one way to go. My experience with LP, not a short experience though, is it is 50% hard work, 50% enjoyment. No doubt the sound is much better than CD but it is really not suitable in my office/workshop environment. My past exeprience with LP at home is I normally caress the LP st up for an hour before I go into it. At office, I spend a couple of hours at work and then go out to the workshop for a few moment of music. Really no time and no mood for the fore-play. Tape may be a convenient way to enjoy analog. But CD is just a press of button.

[#571] Quad ESL Hi, CP, If you can find the new suspension springs and belt, I can send you the black bearing oil and alignment template. Once got these done, you will be hands off for good analogue sound for at least few years. Call me when you are ready to fix your LP12.

[#578] Quad ESL Hi CP & John, The room in our Club House is 11'x10' with floor to floor carpet. Wall paper and a 3 seat fabric material sofa. I think sound acoustic effect will be better than my living room. Because it is so near my apartment, and with the help of my neighbor, I plan to have a pre-listening session this week before I invite you folks over. The main purpose of the pre-listening is to find the best placement spot for the esl57. Will let you know the outcome soonest. Regds

[#581] Quad ESL Patrick, Thanks! Typo in my last post. I meant: I would like to compare the sound from your ESL57 NEW acoustic setup with that that I heard during my last visit to a friend's house in UK this March. His ESL57 reproduced real stunning bass!

[#582] Quad ESL Richard.....I am sure you will be disappointed if you expect real stunning bass. The sound charateristic of ESL57 can not, and should not reproduce deep bass. If you favour deep bass, I can hook up my 100 watt Infinity Servo Subwoofer and play some drum beating pieces. You will see how the highs and mids be ruined by the deep bass.
