[#625] Quad ESL I have acquired a pair of Cary CAD-300-SE mono block power amp with 300B single ended output at 8 watts per channel. It is now in transit to HK. Will use that in our next listening session.

[#627] Quad ESL Patrick.....................I will be eager to know how 300B matches with ESL as well. So far I have tried Quad II(KT66), 12.1(KT66 - thanks to Gingers), MC240(7027), M9(EL34), V73(EL42), V69a(F2a11), St20(EL84), 25+(EL37) and Quicksilver(KT88). Today I tried the Klangfilm Kl.L410 with EL84pp. Sounded sweet and mellow and also with the normal german drive but not as punchy as the V73. Nevertheless, I am only using cheap russian EL84. I will swap the tubes from St20 and try again. Let me know if you want the Music First preamp to test the Cary 300B.

[#628] Quad ESL Patrick I searched Cary 300B and found that it is 15W instead of 8W. It has quite a low input sensitivity and will therefore need a high drive preamp. http://www.caryaudio.com/products/classic/CAD300SE.html CAD 300 SE Signature power amplifiers 15 watts per channel, Single Ended Triode, Pure Class A, Mono Blocks with 300B output tubes. Standard with 4 & 8 ohm speaker switch. Jaguar Anthracite black chassis with clear coat finish, black anodized aluminum front panel. ZERO feedback design. ![]()

[#630] CKL passed away on June 30....... CKL投影機報告書 was executed with unprecedented professionalism and passion which has been, and will be, unrivalled by local, and perhaps most overseas, AV publications for years to come. My deepest condolences to CKL and his family.

[#631] CKL passed away on June 30....... I searched Cary 300B and found that it is 15W instead of 8W ---------------------------- CP......Thanks for your info. The Cary I listened before could be a different version. A friend of mine loan it to me for 2 weeks and he told me it was 8 watts. I didn't like it much at that time. Sweet voices came out from the mouth of Danny Summer instead of rough, run-down voices. Regds

[#635] Quad ESL Patrick and CP, The sound of a tube amp depends, to a substantial extent, on the condition of the tubes in use. It’s imperative therefore to make sure the tubes are in perfect condition before you could possibly judge the merits of the amp. I wonder if you have a decent tube tester to screen the tubes first, or else the results may be misleading at best and devastating at worst. You may not believe the enormous difference a bad tube can bring to your whole system.

[#636] Quad ESL limage Thank you for the advice. I do have several tube testers for checking and matching tubes for use. ![]()

[#638] Quad ESL The sound of a tube amp depends, to a substantial extent, on the condition of the tubes in use ------------------------------ Dear Iimage.......You are absolutely right on the tube issue. take my Quicksilver as an example. J/J KT88 and EH KT88 reproduced quite a different sound effect. The Cary CAD-300-SE my friend loaned me before uses WE 300B. The sound was very smooth and sweet on almost every singer. which I think it contradicts the principle of "garbage in garbage out". Lack of honesty, I would say. Regds Patrick

[#639] Quad ESL I didn't know the condition of the WE300B used in the Cary. It could be a bad tube. May be that was the reason my other friend owned the same Cary amp uses J/J 300B praised his amp as his most favorate amp. He also owned Cary 805. He uses a pair of cone speaker call "Louder" and custom made into a box cabinet call "Mauhorn". He claimed that there are a "Mauhorn" lover club in UK. Most of the "Mauhorn" club members were previous Quad ESL57 lovers. Regds Patrick

[#640] Quad ESL Patrick, "louder"-could it be Lowther, whose sound is just the opposite of Quad ESL, with its rather veiled midrange and terribly slow low end response. They are not accurate by modern standards, yet they can be perfectly alluring in music reproduction. limage

[#641] Quad ESL Dear all, More often than not, I have found that the small tubes affect the sound much more than the output tubes do in power amps, probably because they handle the low level stage of amplification where every bit counts. The output tubes, provided they are within tolerance, should be able to faithfully process whatever is fed to them. As such, it pays to select the very best tubes for the front end rather than the other way round. I am not suggesting the output tubes need not be screened and matched. I just want to say, out of bitter experiences, that we must not forget to check the small tubes first in case anything should go wrong. limage

[#642] Quad ESL "louder"-could it be Lowther -------------------- Iimage......You may be right! We always mentioned about "Louder" as well as "Mauhorn". But I never got a chance to spell it out. Can you share some of your experience on Lowther compare with ESL57. Regds Patrick
