[#663] Quad ESL I am just another decadent audio freak who happened to be drowned in audio lunatic soup some 30 years ago _________________________________________________________________________ limage No audiophile is decadent, the inherent indulgence is either an urge for ownership which furthers economic development, the relentless quest for true sound reproduction or the devoted enjoyment of music, or a mixture of them all. All of these are positive attributes to the world or arts, the world of science or the world of economics. My humble collection is not really in equipment but a vast vocabulary of audio terms, equipment models etc. which enables me to make floundering conversations on high fidelity when most of the time even myself don't know what I'm talking about. Like your goodself, I started the audio journey some 20 odd years ago when I had had some disposable income when studying in the university. Ever since I drifted with the audio mega-trends boasted by the reviewers and manufacturers, ended up with a load of rubbish and getting nowhere. Despite the amount of amps that I have tried, I only sticked to a few loudspeakers and I come to believe that I might end up with the Quad ESL. Most people said the ESL is addictive and conveys the true passion of music makers. I find them a close representation of the atmosphere of live music. I rank tonality, transparency etc. secondary to soundstage and ambience as I am so much fond of live chamber music. I have been a sponsor for the HK Phil and Radio 4 for many years and I joined most of the concerts including the studio rehearsals and the in house playings of Radio 4. Despite the limitations of the ESL, I must say they are the closest to the in house playings amongst the many speakers that I have heard. Many thanks to Patrick and Hon whom are the major inspiration of me owning the ESL57. It will be great to meet another music lover who would appreciate the merits of the ESL and have the same passion for music reproduction. I look forward to meeting you and your pastry. I'm sure Dennis will bring along his great collection of red wine and chinese tea and we have a great party.

[#667] Quad ESL Dear CP, It’s always a pleasure reading your intellectual comments, informative and full of insight. By decadent I mean the poor soul who is hopelessly in love with music and in order to approximate live concerts in his music den, has spared no efforts in an endless strive to achieve that elusive end, at the expense of everything else. I could have made a very successful business man if I were not decadent. Please rest assured, my pastries as well as my tastes in audio, are not going to disappoint the initiated. limage

[#672] Quad ESL jcml......Thanks for yr complement. The pair of ESL57 I got is indeed in good condition. I bought it from the original owner at a very good price. The serial number is in the 49K which I think is the lastest version. The seller, later become my friend, is a highly respectable gentleman. People who talks about how hard it is to maintain the ESL57 probably don't know too much about ESL57. I have been enjoying my ESL57 for more than 10 years and never encountered any problem. I never un-plug my ESL57 regardless of the humidity. The humidity in New York, Houston and other big cities are much worst than HK. and the folks there owns ESL. I don't think the humidity will ruin the ESL. They probably ruined by abuse used. CP got his ESL57 better than reasonable price. I know another lucky guy Dennis just got his 2nd pair in good condition at a super, super price. If you are serious, just keep an eye on the market. I am sure you will be the proud owner of ESL57 one of these days. Regds Patrick

[#674] Quad ESL Re:I rank tonality, transparency etc. secondary to soundstage and ambience Dear CP, Very well said. I take the same approach but from a slightly different angle. While people indulge themselves incessantly over the timbre of a particular violin passage, or how wet one should get in front of Ben Webster’s sax, they are almost certain to miss the enjoyment of music in its proper perspective. I tend to believe when one succeeds to recreate the right soundstage set in the right ambience, the rest, be it vocal or instrument, would fall into their respective places almost automatically. Chamber music is also my beloved cup of tea. I am rather proud, in fact, to have owned a substantial collection of St Martin-in-the-field recordings made in the 60’s. It is a great pity that St. Martin is no longer the same as it was. limage
