I could enjoy hours on end in Patrick’s cubicle with perfect good faith, even though I understand CP cannot suffer to have anything less spectacular than his superlative writing! I guess I have given him sufficient pressure to squeeze every drop of performance from his V72/69 ESL combo. It may well be a true blessing for everyone of us. |

| [#808] Visiting Patrick and Dennis It was a nice experience yesterday to hear 3 different pairs of Quad ESL 57 Patrick has a pair with very very good condition. Perfect black grill placed nicely Arcici stands. Sound nice. May try Quad II to see if it impresses him. Dennis got a pair of One Thing Audio serviced. I really think the sound has not fully open up. If Dennis has run in the speaker for longer, it should be as good as his pair of original speaker. He used the original pair on original feet. I think there can be a huge improvement if he places them on OTA stands and remove the cloth. (but it will look really ugly as I tried to examine the grill and there were dents) My experience ,comparing the oringal and OTA pair in UK is that the sound of OTA serviced pair is more HiFi, with tighter bass and louder bass, better soundstage. So it is a more all rounded speaker but lack the original beauty of the mid and high an original ESL 57 produces |

It was a big surprise in first instance when stepping into his studio and it turned into more an aspiration to me after listening to the system a while. | [#810] Visiting Patrick and Dennis Dear Limage, The experience we had when we spent our night in your studio was truely aspirating. I rarely use the word "aspiration". Two ideas sparked off immediately in mind on my way home that night: 1) A new layout for my living room. 2) An invitation to Richard's studio situated in Kowloon Bay probably in late Autumn or mid September. Richard's studio is currently under renovation. He has just regained his faith in stacked ESL after lifting one pair of his ESL 14 inches above the ground quite recently. We are currently discussing the design of a proper stacked ESL, probably we need to seek for your opinion once blueprint is ready. Refards Dennis |

| [#811] Visiting Patrick and Dennis Dear Dennis, You have a good sized room, you have a large collection of LPs and you have 3 pairs of superlative speakers. What is left to be done is to make the best use of them all. We understand that all good speakers require careful placement. For superlative speakers like the ESL, you need even more meticulous positioning to get the best out of them. It could be a much more strenuous exercise than what would normally be expected. While you are right to say that small speakers like the LS3/5A are easier to deploy, it is only because of their physical size, not their quality. I am sure both rcwy and gingers must have spent quite an effort to get their speakers singing. Your friend Richard has a system that would certainly raise gasps of envy from everyone, more so if it is a double Quad. I’ll be more than excited to hear his system. If you don't mind, we simply wish to draw your experience and incorporate your opinion into double QUAD design as well as the room accoutic treatment thru site visit and discussion. We are serious on double QUAD. Secondly, we wish to hear about your opinion on Maggie and Richard's problem with his tri-amp TAD speaker before re-visiting Excel's 7 feet. I must admit to you that all the people we met in this thread are respectable gentlemen and I hope to serve you and friends here with better pur-er tea (how-about genuine fifty year old naked name iron tea cake) next time when you guys dropped in my flat for a break. As I said to you during your last visit to my workshop, I was not entirely happy with the placement of my Tannoy 12" monitor gold's. | [#816] Speaker placement The lack of a proper soundstage in many homes in Hong Kong is largely due to personal bias (on the placement of speakers) and the need to compromise under limits of home space. But the first type of reason is more significant as I see it in a hindsight. I'll tell my bias, to encourage brothers to do experiments at their places if they are not satisfied with the soundstage. :) |

| [#817] Speaker placement My bias on the placement of vintage Tannoy is that Tannoy was designed for placement close to the front wall. So, when my pair of Tannoy arrived in Hong Kong in February this year, I did place my Tannoy close to the wall. But the soundstage was far too bad compared to the pair of LS3/5As placed at roughly 1/3 of the length of the listening room of my workshop. In March till April, I tried various positions at places near the front wall. One inch further away, 2 inches,.. or 1 inch closer to listener, 2 inches, with heavy toe-in, light toe-in, no toe-in.. etc., with some audiable improvement in the bass or treble at some positions. But the overall soundstage was not up to a acceptable standard, compared to the LS3/5A in particular. After April, I had to give up the search for the optimal speaker placement as I was a bit fed up and had to write a dissertation. The placement of speakers remained as shown by the photo below, until I started to explore new placements this afternoon. Thanks for Limage's thoughts given to me last week!  |

| [#818] Speaker placement a) The front corners should be kept clear of objects, to make use of the sound wave reflected, instead of to kill the reflections. It is no harm to so some exercise; so I removed the pair of Harbeth from the two corners. But improvement was not obvious.  |

| [#819] Speaker placement b) My first bias: The Tannoy should be designed for placement close to the wall and I am reluctant to move out the Rogers to let the Tannoy try, because the 1/3 position is already occupied by the Rogers and I am happy with the Rogers. Thinking about the 1/3 rule, I bravely moved the Tannoy much away from the front wall as pictured below. But still the improvement was not obvious. Fed up again?  |

| [#820] Speaker placement c) Fed up again? Almost. Instead of moving the speakers, I followed Limage's advice to walk repeatedly along the centre line from back to front to search the "一頭都係聲" position. Bingo! The "一頭都係聲" position lies actually in the 1/3 position of the room.  |

| [#822] Speaker placement d) The Tannoy is placed at the "一頭都係聲" position, where the Tannoy couples with the entire room! To toe-in or not, and if to toe-in, how much toe-in, depends on the actual distribution of the sound energy by the particular speakers in the particular room. I took the opportunity to adjust the seating position as well.  |
