[#1005] Big gathering cpsjj, I would love to have a pair of MG 3.6R but my sister-in-law may not like the idea of having two big panels taking up space in the sitting area and blocking the views. (She’s the one who calls the shots in Shatin --- I am just parasiting on my brother when I return to Hong Kong. The Martin Logan’s are more acceptable because they are visually transparent. I like the Martin Logan’s too. However, I have a feeling that Martin Logan won’t be around for long. Gayle Sanders sold the company last year and most of the original workforce has left the company. I still have a pair of the original CLS in pristine condition in Waterloo, Ontario. They were just lovely. I have not quite made up my mind. If your were in my situation, what would you do?

[#1006] Big gathering I believe your 300B is 110V. Since Dennis does not have any step down transformer, would you mind bringing one along. -------------------------------------- Thanks CP. I'll bring the step down transformer along. Regds Patrick

[#1007] Big gathering feikeung, If I don't have much time in Hong Kong, I wouldn't put my favourite speaker here. I'll rather frequent more concerts or visiting friends. But if I do have a quite a bit of time here, I will rent a studio flat and have a proper set up. I know you are more a Don Giovanni and brings every woman down. But there's no point they all avenge on Leporello instead. If you miss the Maggies so much, I wouldn't mind if you put them in my place and pop up in my office every time you are in Hong Kong.

[#1009] Big gathering Don't worry Feikeung, Since Monday will be very crowdy as I guess over 10 people will be coming along. I believe Monday session will not be suitable for serious listening. It is fine if you join us. I'll probably call up another meeting only for the panel man team in a hope to find out what the hell my problem of poor bass is. So if you could make it

[#1010] Big gathering Dear all, Let's start at 1:30pm. Those bring along the gear and wish to arrive earlier please come to my flat at 12:00. I suggest we lunch downstair in the Clubhouse (light meal provided with little msg) to save walking distance and time. My priviledge to host the lunch this time, please be warned that don't fight for the bill. May I suggest we finish and dinner at around 6:30pm (alas, the time my wife returning home). Afternoon delight will be serving if you did not have the time taking early lunch. My fingers tell me there are at least ten guests visiting my small flat Monday. Let's freeze this number. My mobile: 9450 4803

[#1013] Big gathering Powercord, CP and Patrick, I'd found quite interestingly there is much much better and deeper bass as well as improved dynamic from my OTA ESL than my original ESL. I guess the OTA can really roll down to 40Hz if proper placement and there is 6 to 10 db gain in mid to low bass than the original ESL. I use my TV and occassionally DVD to run in my OTA ESL and it seems working well, far better than day one, that is 5% and am radio sound. However, I guess it is still in its 50% potential and the mid to treble range is far from ideal. Powercord, the OTA has very high potential indeed and I guess I'll need another 100 hours to fully run in the OTA. With sufficient run in time, perhaps my OTA will blow our pants wet when you return to HK next annual leave. When will your next return? CP and Powercord, Any comment on your OTA? CP, you may take my original ESL to your studio for comparison with your OTA if you like. I mean as long as you like. I'll focus my effort to run in the OTA after Monday meeting.

[#1014] Big gathering Dennis, As I understand my 57 was restored by OTA, not a full rebuilt, so I'm not sure what had been done nor the actual history of the speaker. But I find my pair has good enough bass in its current height and position. Do you have any idea of the history of your original 57 from Choice? Have they been modified or restored? Yes, it will be interesting to test your speakers here and see whether I can diagnose any problem, or may be hopefully give them a cure.

New caps, no more hum? ---------------------------------------------- 12.1 or 25A. No problem. As 12.1 drove Patrick's esl57. I think this turn should be 25a :-) Both sound good to my ears. Most of my guests recently prefer 25a to 12.1 :-) |

[#1021] The price of ESL-57 in HK Dennis OTA is more all rounded than the original one. Yes, deeper and tighter bass. I think it is the best choice for the stacked Quad project, as it is the only chance to get 4 matched speaker. I have an idea of using the Mark Levinson Decca as a reference for the frame, and put all the panels on the same plane. So the angle of the panel can be tilted. High can also be adjusted if I drill a few holes on the side posts on both sides. I know a carpenter in Hong Kong and will be back in Dec with a draft of my design. Meanwhile, I am looking for a pair to give it a service by OTA.

[#1022] The price of ESL-57 in HK 元朗發燒友 definitely 快快埋位! Yesterday afternoon I visited cpsjj at his warehouse and was delighted to find a treasure trove! My friend took some pics but I don't know if he'll post them anytime soon. The room is HUGE. I was really surprised the Quad ESL 57 actually had some nice bass! Vocals and strings were excellent. The setup was elaborate. Ayre CDP fed into a DIY TGV attenuator box then into a fixed gain preamp (forgot name) then into a pair of Telefunken amps. The biggest treat was when cpsjj played us Belafonte at Carnegie Hall, on his Revox open reel! Great analogue sound! cpsjj is very nice and gentlemanly. His friend too. Great place to hang out! And surprisingly not hot without air-con (and tubes running)! I just read SOME of the Maggie vs Quad discussions here. I am a fan of both and do not wish to join the debate, but there is one thing I'd like to say: I think in terms of truth of timbre, especially vocals and strings, I have always thought electrostatics, particularly Quad, to be slightly superior. Of course horns still rank first.
