Thanks a millian for Dennis' warm hospitality and delicious lunch, limage's pastry and CP's transportation. It was a wonderful day. Hope the music wasn't too loud for Dennis' lovely baby girl.

Dennis......Please let me know upon arrival of yr OTA treble panel and I will pick up my tool box to help you replace them.

Patrick,

Your 300B is excellent. I am afraid you have to invest quite heavily on a new pre-amp to justify your Cary.

[#1167] Dennis' warmest hospitality
Good Host / Naughty Guest
------------------------------

Good host ~ Nothing to say. Dennis did all his best.

Naughty guests ~ Patrick, CP & John Keung

See what we had done.
There are the reasons :-)

Akai OEM CD player Vs LP12 set up
Klangfilm speaker cable Vs expensive Nordost
LS3/5A Vs ESL57

Patrick needed his CD player to play his favourite CDs & justified Dennis's set up.
CP's intention was unknown. Perhaps he doesn't want to spend his money in the expensive cable anymore.
John keung wanted to confirm his TL/25A still worked great with LS3/5A :-)

Honest to say, the Leak TL/25A may be too strong for the ESL57 if compared with the Leak TL/12 point One :-)

Did not buy the toys wrong
----------------------------------

The following brothers are not necessary to worry

Dennis's cable is better to my ears.
Patrick's Cary may be the best choice for his esl57 in his room.
TL/25A is proved not to be easily demaged. I still recalled they JUMPED inside CP's car.
Dennis's LP set up is great to my ears :-)

Who is wrong?
May be some who used LS3/5A for tuning/ furniture display :-)
Kidding :P

Thanks everyone turned out in Dennis home yesterday. Again, thank you for Dennis arrangement. As I know, Dennis spared his time with baby girl to fine tune his gear to meet everyone’s expectations.
Last time, Ginger bought his Leak 12.1 , this time was Leak 25. I wish next time would be Leak 50.
Patrick last time bought 2A3, this time has already evolved to 300B.
Dennis’s speaker cable was Nordost flat line last time, this time has upgraded to SPM. Things are changing very fast.
Those intend to visit Dennis home shortly. I suggest you ask Dennis take you to his apartment’s club house for a coffee. Many portraits of Jazz master were hung there.
All portraits of Jazz master are a veritable of who’s who. Very interesting program to guess who is who.

rcwy,

Since you had other engagement yesterday and I'd missed the chance to talk to you on your Dual front-end analogue source. How that's going? Is is better than CD player?

Gingers,

I forgot to tell you that my LS3/5a is connected to my tube radio and my little humble Cyrus amp. Definitely not for room acoustic tuning. They sound beautifully when listening to uncle ray or Albert Au.

Dennis:

Thanks x3! As cpsjj said, we've never had it so good. Good lunch, great pu-er and cheesecake/water melon!

But more importantly, I liked the unusually fussy Quad ESL57. For a person like me, who likes to walk around, the dispersion is again better than I thought. It was regrettable that just when things got groovy with the resident system the plugs were pulled! At that point, things were transparent and Carmen-Schedrin ballet was excellent.

I love children who just woke up from an afternoon nap. Your daughter has very beautiful and unusually dark black eyes and hair. I miss my black hair!

I do have one question. What was the interonnect between the Linto and the preamp?

Ginger:

Believe me, contrary to popular belief, I can put myself in others' positions too! I am PRETTY SURE if our roles were reversed I would have scccccreammmmed at you!

For some reason I misunderstood what you meant by the handle is broken. I thought you meant the manual lid-lock.

Believe me, I still have it freeze-framed in my mind the very moment the LEAK came out with the bottom. It landed on one corner, then crushing the plastic below. Miraculously none of the tubes were damaged.

Truth, I really respect your training. There should be more in your profession like you. When the thing happened your face betrayed no emotion. (Was it imagining?) I saw your chest expand an inch or so and soft but frightening words were squeezed out of the clenched teeth:

"I t--oooo--l--d you the hannn---dle was B--R---O--k---e---n..."

I watched you swallow your lunch in silence and I swallowed my fear...relieved when you said "the pasta is delicious". At least you find the meal to have taste.

Throughout the Quad II's tenure, we both wondered about the whether the 25A sustained internal damage. Every second felt like ten...I mapped out Dennis'apartment. Boy, with all those people it would have been very difficult to make an escape without knocking down someone.

Then the farcial episode with the preamp connection! When it finally sang the room air pressure increased quite a bit when Ginger and I let out our puffed-up dead air.

I was really surprised that the 25A did not really match up so well tonally. I agree with Ginger's statement that for Patrick's small room I can see the 300B is good enough with Quad. But the 25A was great with 3/5A.

Incidentally, the one that did not fall clips a bit at louder passages, whereas the dropped one was solid as hell. I'd not like to think the fall did it good. Maybe check the tubes/capacitors/sockets of the other one? It is a minor problem though.

cpsjj:

Sorry for tardiness and thanks for the ride.

I really liked the Klangfilm chicken cable. It actually looks more like an interconnect!

Yeah, the naughty 400CX-II. How come bad connection only happens at parties??? Murphy's law is really true most of the time.

Should you and Wah gor want to come listen to Tannoy, just give me a call. Sorry, Margaux is too expensive; I specialize in cheap but reasonabe wine.

Patrick:

Too bad we cannot recall where we've met before. Your face and voice are so familiar.

I actually liked the Radio Shack Discman. It has an eveness that is not colored. Great party stuff! I have the Akai equivalent.

limage:

Great to have met you again! I must again praise the products of your bakery. For those who don't know, DOMI is on Austin Rd, TST, between Cox's Rd and Nathan Rd. It is a great bakery that would not be run over even in Central and Causeway Bay.

One thing I have to say was yesterday's sound overall was not "vintage" at all, quite hifi! I liked that.

Thanks for letting me in.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Boys, don't get too serious. These things do happen. They are acts of God if not jokes of God. Everybody was doing their part out of good will. Doctorjohn generously lended a helping hand, Gingers and Patrick zealously supplied their treasures for our enjoyment, not to say Dennis' perfect hosting.

There was no fatality. Gingers came out to be a happier Gingers knowing too well now that his king of KT66 is indestructible. Doctorjohn puffed out a louder "phew" than Patrick, coming out from a narrow escape and has a never better peace of mind. Patrick has a big smile on his decision, not that much on the money spent but the prudence of decision. All friends together went through these accidents, getting closer and have a laughing stalk to talk about.

Do I feel guilty every time I lifted Gingers 25A and something happened, either a somersault or a bumgy jump? No, that part of the fun.

Am I just bluffing as a sideliner? Well I did break a fully matched EZ12 last time.

Have fun.

A pair of 2-year-old MG 3.6R with original pacakaging was offered to me @ $25K. Do you folks think it a fair deal? Or should I get a new pair from Excel for $36K and get it over with?

John,

The link between Linn Linto and QUAD 22 is the standard Linn black copper cable comes with the electronic. All standard Linn stuff from cartridge all the way to its interconnectors, nothing special.

Thank for your kind words. I am only a learner and hope to learn fast from you gentlemen.

[#1180] Quad ESL

The next meeting shall be an A/B comparison session between the 2 analog sources, open reel and LP, using ESL57 in my place; may be CD at the same time.

Thanks to Dennis in advance to revive my LP12.

My limited reel to reel collection consists mainly of classical music and therefore the repertoire could be quite limited. By memory of what I picked up in Dennis' place yesterday, at least we can have "Belafonte at Carnegie", "Persuassive Percussion" and "Espana" in addition to others such as "Scheherazade", etc.

CP,

Surely no problem all the records you mentioned except the Belafonte is 45 rpm.

Let us think think to expand the choices. The gap may be closed up when playing 45 rpm
