Dear all,

Latest news

To celebrate the birthday of my LP12 who is going on to be 3-year old on coming 29 September, I have decided ...... ...... to sell my current Linn black Ittok arm and Linn Karma MC cartridge afetr 3-week serious thinking !!!!

Actually, I have already sold my head and arm to a Linn lover, so mda who is coming to visit my ESL on Tuesday, will be the last chap to hear my current LP12 setup using a fresh and low mileage Troika.

The Troika is my most favourite cartridge ever since I fell in love with LP12 and therefore I have decided to keep it for another ..... ? years.

OTA has kindly sent me a apir of treble panel replacement hopefully arriving early next week. So after coming Tuesday, I shall be using my DVD player only to burn in my updated OTA ESL until ........

Dear all,

Those friends who knew me well should realize that I am a die-hard vinyl freak and LP12 advocate.

The Linn Troika MC has always been my favourite cartridge. Due to some reason, I'd long forgotten its magic and seductive voice since I installed the Linn Karma few year back.

I happened had a chance putting the troika on my black Ittok again yesterday after the Karma was gone on last Friday night. (The Ittok will soon be disappeared next week)

Wow, the result ... I once thought to myself playing the Carmen ballet, 李香蘭 and Kenny G to my guests last Monday using the Karma MC were excellent analogue sound, but only until yesterday, I realise I made a mistake. Well the Karma was excellent performer at only half the price of a Troika, but my fresh memory of Karma's performance was blur and lacked of absolute clarity when benchmarking with the best.

If time could swift back to last Monday, I would have changed the Karma to Troika to please you all.

So next time when you are in my place and my LP12 is ready, you should be hearing my all time favourite MC, the Troika. It surely won't let anyone down. My word.

Will still be a complete LP12 set up, just upgrade the arm and phono lead to latest EKOS spec and fit my fresh Troika MC on.

I guess the sound will become more or the less Linn character before and after. But I hope the upgrade can bring in a little more details and solid bass, better tonal balance and improved intrument separation and deeper sound stage when playing loud passage.

mda and his companion came to my place and spent half night with my ESL. I understand mda is a real experienced and knowledgeable guy and will treasure my ESL in future. It is also interesting to find out that mda is an experienced Linn LP12 user. Hope to learn more from mda.

I am sad to see my black Ittok leaving today and dear friend, I have to bear with my DVD player and CD disc for at least few weeks until the arrival of my new tonearm.

To make room for my other two pairs of ESL, mda will take my best sounding pair (the 1st and the orignial QUAD) that you heard last Monday. Patrick will help us to fix the newer OTA pair when the treble panel arriving from UK in few days time. If everything in place and running smoothly, I shall invite full team of all panel men to listen to my new Linn flagship setup and OTA ESL probably in early October. I want to assure you that the ESL sounds twice better last night with my Troika fitted on than our last gathering. Just wonder how good it would perform with the latest flagship EKOS arm.

I hope to ship back the the NOS ESL (still sealed in the box) from Canada in December when some of my senior family members return to HK Christmas time.

With kind consent from mda, I copy and paste his after-listening comment below for sharing in this thread. In addition to his comment on ESL, please also note that mda has kindly shared out quite interesting information regarding the history price of some old QUAD equipment with us.

The QUAD 22 pre-amp is really great pre-amp when partnered with QUAD II. It looks cheap but it's a giant killer by any mean.

Thank you for spending half of the night with both of us tonight. Very enjoyable indeed.

Very surprised how good the Quad 22 is. I remembered when I first bought a st of Quad 22 and II almost 18 years ago in UK, the 22 sounded thick and froggy and no one is paying more than UKP$30 for it. The Quad II on the other hand cost over UK$200 at that time.

The most memorable Quad ESL I heard was in a vintage hifi shop in Nottingham about 15 years ago. Not a formal demonstration though. The speakers were about 3 to 4 feets apart, using an unimpressive 16 bit CD machine and an early 70s Pioneer amp (those with silver panels and big indicators). With small volume it sounded so musical and blown my Big Beard valve amps + Celestion SL600si away and I knew I need a pair one day. The speakers were ESL-63.

However the old wisdom told me that the 57 should be better especially the production run is longer than 63. This reconfirmed my view after tonight especially the bass was surprisingly good, overall musical sound but a tad too hifi for my taste (may be I am not in King's seat). If you went to the hi fi show for the last 2 years, you should know how bad the modern Quad ESL sounds.

I was immediately trapped by the sound from a pair of panel look ESL63 some twenty odd years back while I was drifting along the Tottenham Court Road doing my window shopping as usual. Yes, it was a usual activity to a poor student like me, girl dating and window shopping.

The ESL63 was driven by a Marantz CD player and a small set of QUAD transistor pre and power amp. The sound was really something to me and I knew I must own a pair someday. Well, a very similar story to mda. After doing some research on ESL with a little saving on hand in recent months, I decided to become the purist and settle on the original ESL57.

Frankly, I was not really satisfied with the poor little bass from ESL at the very beginning. Now I am a happy man because I knew the ESL can produce real music tone with a hell lot of real bass although not punchy if properly handled. To me, still a long way to go.

I hope mda will join the forum very soon and we'll be able to have a house warming for the ESL's new home.

Just wonder what amp mda will be using to drive the Quad.

I quite agree that the Quad 22 is a perfect match for the Quad II as I had tried the matching with quite a number of preamps in my place and the Quad 22 sounded most soothing. I recently restored a Quad 22/Quad II for a friend and the combo just blew away a Boulder set up.

I recently reshuffled all the equipment and moved around the speakers in the quest to create a larger soundstage comparable to limage's. I was successful in enlarging the soundstage by about 50% but everything seemed slightly out of focus so I'm not quite comfortable. I'm now back to square one. Hard work!!

The article "Quad 1956 vs. Quad 2006" was written by Ken Kessler and featured in the recent 50th Anniversary Special Edition of HiFi News.

Ken mixed and matched the Quad 1956 setup with Quad 22/II + ESL 57 with the 2006 setup with Quad qc24 + Quad II-40 and Quad II Classic + ESL 988/989.

He then ignore the Quad 22/qc24 and drive the power amp driectly with a Quad CD player and concluded that the best combo is Quad II Classic driving ESL57!

Welcome mda.

I'm just curious as to the compatibility of different amps driving the ESL, tube or ss. Might help to widen my choices.

Collecting amps is one thing while matching them with your favourite speaker is another. We have had the rarest Leak 25a from our Leak guru driving the ESL which didn't sound as good as a Quad II. I might have the most humble amp doing the job, just a 4W german rubbish.

Is the input sensitivity of Quad II Classic lower than the original Quad II?

I have used cdp directly to Quad II as well as with a passive preamp; they didn't come any close to a Quad 22!
