[#1404] Quad ESL Many thanks. Wah Gor is now in the cardiac care unit under intensive care and for observation for another 5 days at least. He is bed-rested, can't eat solid food so I brought him a pile of "Tube Amp World" and "Hi-Fi Review" for "spiritual nutrition". His heart attack came Saturday afternoon so may be the music from the 25A on Friday was too toxic, even he is so exposed to the V69 and ESL and is still not immune.

[#1405] Quad ESL Dear CP, Please send our regards to Wah Gor and we all wishing Wah Gor to recover soon. I shall prepare double puer-er tea for him when his next visit. After all hard work by Patrick and Edmund, I guess we have to order some diode from overseas and we will wait for Wah Gor to return to tell us the results of our mission. I can only conclude that the more we touch on the ESL, the more we learn. Another news is the Linn man came this afternoon and install a new arm for my T-T. Will need to run in the arm lead for another 20 hours to tell the difference.

| [#1406] Quad ESL CP......Sorry to hear Wah Gor is hospitalized. Hope he gets well soon. Best luck to him. Our mission is not yet finished. We replaced all the diodes and caps (with 1kV only because we can't find anything higher) and the voltage is low on the bass tap. The reading after new parts installed is: 1. Transformer secondary output : 590 vAC. 2. Treble tap: 1,500 vDC. 3. Ladder step 1 towards bass terminal: 800 vDC. 4. Step 2: 1500 vDC. 5. Step 3: 2000 vDC. 6. Step 4: 2300 vDC. 7. Step 5: 2450 vDC. 8. Step 6: 2500 vDC. 9. Step 7: 2450 vDC. 10. Step 8: 2400 vDC. Dennis will report the above result to Steve of One Thing Audio and seek his advice. I got the reading using my Fluke 80K-6 HV Probe with Edmond's Fluke 77 meter in manual mode. I supect the problem is in the diodes we used (1kV). because the old diodes I removed from my EHT part No. 1AV30 states voltage 3kV. Meanwhile I am holding my horse awaiting advice from Steve. | [#1407] Quad ESL Patrick, I have forward your measurements to Steve. Hope we can have more of his advice. CP, I am afriad we have to keep you hanging a while for our results. Any clue? |

[#1408] Quad ESL One more observation. I need to turn the volume of the pre-amp to level 4.5 to achieve the same sound presuure of previous level 2.5. OTA's Steve once mentioned that the sensitivity of OTA ESL is higher than the original. I believe the lower sensitivity indicates a lower EHT voltage.

[#1410] Quad ESL Grant, HK is fine, sociallly and politically stable. (Sorry to Thailand people.) The wether is getting less humid and becoming nicest in the year for travelers. When will you and your friends come to HK again? The best months are October to December! :)

[#1411] Quad ESL I feel sad to hear our good friend Wah Gor is sick. I wish he get well soon. Good health to everybody. According to Mozilla's report; ---------------------------------------------- Initial tests showed that they were churning out voltages below ideal. I wondered what could be wrong as all the parts were brand new and the transformer secondaries were within 5% of their rated voltage. The 1N4007 is only spec’d out for 1KV with two in series for every step of the ladder. Quad enthusiast Gary Jacobson advised me replace the diodes with 2or 3KV types. Research on the net led me to 5KV diodes which I immediately ordered. They arrived 4 days later and after installing them –Bingo! I had the voltages up just where I want them. ----------------------------------------------- My queries, Mozilla’s measurement were carried out by equivalent meter and probe as Patrick. He had the high voltage reading after replaced the 5KV diodes? Our observation yesterday, after replaced all diodes and capacitors, we measured the high voltage with Patrick‘s probe and meter, the voltmeter jump up to over 3KV , it drops significantly to around 2 KV at once. Afterward, it never come close to 3 KV anymore . The nature of diode multiplier: ------------------------------------------------- In this type of circuit we have to assume that the load does not draw a significant charge from the capacitors. ----------------------------------------------- Mostly likely Patrick’s probe and meter is not suitable for that kind of measurement. I suggest , order or rebuilt that EHT board without doing any measrurement with our meters. And connect it back to the ESL57. do the judgement by our ears only. It might be the turning point for all our ESL 57 owners. ![]()

[#1422] Quad ESL Try to compare different versions of the "Linz" before the VPO concert. Realized how limited my collection of Mozart's symphonies is. Only managed to find 5 : Marriner/ASMF Bernstein/VPO Bohm/Berliner Karajan/Berliner Maag/Madrid Peter Maag is always my favourite Mozartian. Although VPO is the version I like to get more familiar with for the concert, Bernstein's performance is always way down on my list. Bohm is much more sparkling than the silky smooth Karajan and is more like the mood of Mozart when composing "Linz". ![]()
