[#1483] Quad ESL EHT retrofit grogramme We were in CP's workshop today, auditioned the ESL57 with the Klangfilm V69. They are a very nice combination indeed. The midrange is one of the most vivid I have heard. The bass is not deep but very tight and tuneful. I always rate the ESL57 as one of the best speakers made in this planet, I am sure I will own a pair again one day. After the Klangfilm, the Quad 22 pre/II power amps were connected and their weaknesses were demonstrated. They are warmer but less transparent than the V69. Peter Walker may have designed the Quad 22/II with the ESL57, but there are certainly other better amps. It was good fun today. Hon Hon

[#1484] Quad ESL Many thanks to Hon, Richard, J_L, Patrick and doctorjohn coming all the way to my cubby hole after visiting Richard. I had, for once in many months, swept the floor to welcome these vips, especially Hon and Patrick who are the main inspiration for me getting the ESL. Richard's Tannoy, after his careful placement, is perhaps the best Tannoy I have heard so far after doctorjohn's Cantebury, a very typical Tannoy's relaxed sound but full of deep bass. The ESL might have failed Richard's bass test but I hope the overall performance with what I regard the very open and coherent midrange did not disappoint my visitors, despite the out-of-spec size of the room. I hope Hon could have more time next week to have a more serious auditioning................I haven't switched on the analog source yet.

[#1487] Quad ESL The ESL might have failed Richard's bass test --------------------------------------- Never fail. Just not deep enough. We can't expect everything from the ESL. Its overall performance is amusing. CP has made a lot efforts in fine-tuning the ESL's placement. Be the ESLs placed by 0.618, 1/3, trials & errors, or whatever, I can hear a very vivid stereo soundstage from his ESLs. For LS3/5A, vivid stereo soundstage is standard achievement. But for ESLs, I can see it is absolutely not easy!

[#1488] Quad ESL Dear Hon.......I totally agree with your statment that ESL57 is one of the best speaker in this planet. CP's ESL57 is indeed sounded very open, vivid and musical which did not disappoint any of us yesterday. However, I heard ESL57 performed even better in a suitable environment. I truly believe CP's ESL57 can demonstrate its full capability if CP can create a music chamber with the right size for ESL57.

[#1494] Quad ESL Dear all, I am glad hearing you boys all had a wonderful gathering with Hon yesterday. Happy birthday, Hon. I guess we all meet again, how about on 11/10 (Wed) morning? Ginger's place first. If you don't mind, follow at my place in the afternoon after lunch. Any voluntee to arrange the third place in the evening? I guess my QUAD 22/II will do better with the CV4004. Trust me. Dennis

[#1495] Quad ESL CP, blue-ray and Patrick, I just fitted my returned EHT boards to my pair of ESL today and they are now singing again. One Thing Audio's engineer had inspected my old boards and concluded nothing wrong with them. Treble and bass all measured perfectly at 1.5K and 6K respectively. Now I am a happy man again after waiting 10 day with my new tone arm and cartridge sitting idle in the corner. The OTA's men suspected the probe or neither did we give enough time to charge up the bass panel. Well, I never mind about the technical stuff as long as all my gears are up and inspected playing with my peace of mind. Now I am thinking how to spray a new color to ny OTA ESL. I'll wait for your opinion on 11/10.

[#1496] Quad ESL I am sure both the probe and meter caused the low voltage problem. Normally, it takes 2 – 4 hours to discharge the High voltage. But the probe and meter discharge the high voltage in couple seconds. Mathematically, the impedance of the probe and meter are hundred times lower than the panel.

| [#1498] Quad ESL Dear Hon, 男子三十而立. Happy 40 tomorrow. You are probably one of the youngest among us. Assuming you can still hear the treble at 100, you still have a long way, say 100 - 40 = 60 yrs, to enjoy your music. Forgot to ask you visiting Patrick's esl as well. He makes amazing and very nice music from his beautiful ESL. I am pround of knowing Patrick, our ESL man. If OK, will take you to Patrick's own and private music chamber on 11/10 morning after visiting Gingers's LS/35s wall. Surely a great place but only for single person each time. Again happy 40. | [#1500] Quad ESL cp, Patrick, Powercord, Limage, Feikeung and all dear friends, When come to the crucial ESL placement, I always puzzle with the use of toe-in angle. I have tried various distance away from the rear wall, say 5", 6" and now almost 9" to 10", Yes 9 to 10 feet, and I always fond of leveling my ESL (i.e no toe in or out) or simply few degree toe-in angle for most balance sound stage result. Any of your opinion to share with? Limage, We don't mind if you telling us more on your decision on toe-in angle to achieve optimal placement result for your Maggie. Tim, If you were reading this post, any comment on toe in angle for ESL and planar speaker. Have you visited Patrick's music chamber if you doubt about your room size for your ESL? |
