[#1503] Quad ESL Dennis, I see that you are perplexed. I guess Limage would advise you taking a bold step in moving your ESLs, not in inches, but in feet, so that the improvement is so obviously audiable that an ordinary man can tell. CP has moved his ESL to roughly 0.618 from the back wall (or roughly 1/3 from the front wall) and achieved amusing results. Be it ESL, Tannoy GRF or Chatsworth, LS3/5A, or Harbeth HLM/Spendor BC1, the logic is basically the same. Get the focal spots of your room for the speakers. To toe-in a lot or a little will depend on the energy dispersion of the speakers. But first of all is to find the focal spots, then to fine-tune the toe-in angle, if necessary. Just my 2 cents. :)

[#1504] Quad ESL Doubtlessly, positioning of speakers is significant. However, it's a very tough job for an old dude like me who have problems at various joints and bones. Sigh ! If I were forty, .....

[#1505] Quad ESL Thanks, Richard, I am sorry I made my question confusing. What I meant was that I could only get a wider and deeper 3D and more importantly layering sound stage by almost leveling the ESL despite distance from rear wall. If I enlarged the toe-in angle, well, the singer become sharper and more focus but start losing ground on the 3-D layering effect behind. I am not sure whether this is a characerictics of panel speaker.

[#1508] Quad ESL Richard, You have mastered all the tricks indeed! Dennis, Please try moving the ESL closer to the side walls together with a little bit of toe-in. Bass definition may improve and along with it wider and more convincing soundstage.

[#1510] Quad ESL Hi guys, Dennis ESL 's system has significant improvement since your last visit. Several additional opulent gears are now in place, EKOS II , Trioka and T-cable. The overall performance is stunning. We have auditioned last time; the bass overwhelmed the room without toe in. So we didn’t think toe-in is necessary.

[#1512] Quad ESL We should try the Braun CSV60 in future. It is perhaps the only amp purposely designed to drive Quad ESL!

[#1513] Quad ESL >Please try moving the ESL closer to the side walls together with a little bit of toe-in. Bass definition may improve and along with it wider and more convincing soundstage. QUAD ESL-57 and Magnepan have different dispersion patterns. Moving the ESL-57 too close to the side walls may result in a loss in image detail. I suspect that ESL-57s sound best acting as “stand-alone” radiators, whereas the Maggies, which I am not terribly familiar with, have to be “coupled” with the boundaries.

[#1517] Quad ESL I would put a jumper to short H2, H3 in the imnput . Then connect 220V AC Live to H1 and Neutral to H4. In the Output side, using both X1, X2 or X3, X4 for 110V AC output. You might consider using X1 , X2 for one Power amp and X3 and X4 for the other power amp.

So we didn’t think toe-in is necessary _______________________________________________________________________ Dennis, My only comment is trust your ears and do more experiments. I'm afraid my experience in the ESL placement is totally irrelevant. I didn't get any help from the side walls, rear wall, front wall, whatsoever. The ESLs are just standing aloof in the middle of the room. In my particular acoustic environment, adjusting the toe-in has nothing to do with the bass nor the soundstage. It does affect layering and more significantly the density at the centre. The bass is more related to the height and I guess, the distance from the side wall. |

[#1521] Quad ESL I aware yesterday that Dennis had turned his system 180 degree on other side of this living room. Which includes the turntable, ESL57...etc? It sounds differently. Patrick, you may need this tool. ![]()
