[#1606] Quad ESL speaker jcml.......................that's a great set up. How come you get rid of it? Blue-Ray...................thanks for the alert. My amps are still working alright, actually never been better. I'm now listening to Smetana's Ma Vlast by Kubelik/VPO. An extremely good recording and performance. Pcs100........................I've downloaded the service manual from OTA website and am now stripping the 63.

[#1607] Quad ESL speaker limage...................I come back to the Smetana because I remember many years ago I played the Die Moldau every time I came back from sailing (dinghy of course). It has a very lucid description of that particular feeling. Try.

[#1608] Quad ESL speaker CP, I rarely listen to Smetana and for the ones I did, I don't even remember the name of the piece. I've been curiously tracking your progess on the ESL 63 which is a speaker I respect highly. You've been a great friend indeed. One word though: be careful of the extra high voltage *_^

[#1609] Quad ESL speaker cp, Do you mind me reiterate once again, careful the high voltage. I would suggest you should not handle this job alone. Can you wait till me or Patrick come along?

[#1610] Quad ESL speaker cp, Please rememeber it is not worth to put yourself in danger when fixing these speakers. Shouldn't you wait for Patrick to come around? I am so much worried about you are taking the risk...

[#1611] Quad ESL speaker Allan, Dennis, limage, Thanks for the concern. These speakers are not monsters though. I went out for a meeting so that's all about the work I did today. All the audio transformers are good. I've stripped one speaker and the clips to the panels were all in place, I haven't remove the dust cover to actually check that yet. The speakers did not shut down so the clamp boards should be ok. What's left is the eht and the capacitor board. I'll pick up Patrick if I will go to TKO in the morning.

[#1612] Quad ESL63 Project Dear friends.....It's no need to be over-exaggerated. CP is an expert and knows what he is doing. However, since Wah Gor is not there, I will be more than happy to participate with this ESL63 repairing project anytime. I will build record and share with you folks on our progress. Regds Patrick

[#1613] Quad ESL speaker CP, I have raised this issue to Master Yu from Excel one year ago. He pointed out that the resistance of electrostatic speaker is extremely low in the high frequencies range. Therefore, the output of power amplifiers is almost short circuit. In case the volume is tuned to too high, it may cause the high voltage to give out sparks. I guess? Notwithstanding, do not treat it like ESL57.

[#1614] Quad ESL speaker Edmund, The ESL57 goes down as low as 0.8 ohm. That's why a lot ss amps blew up right away. There are only a few ss amps that can be safely connected to the 57 but the 63 is already a lot safer. For tube amp, it is a different ball game. Most tube amps should be pretty well protected by the output transformer. The stator voltage on the 63 is 5.5kV whilst the 57 is 6kV. But I believe the signal voltage is stepped up higher in 63 than 57, I have no documentation to prove that. But this could be one of the designs that makes the 63 sound much louder, in particulat the bass.

[#1615] Quad ESL speaker Edmund, Just managed to find more info from the OTA website. I am correct in that the 63 is much more friendly to power amps. Its minimum impedance is 4 ohm (@10kHz) and is purely resistive. Its signal voltage however goes up as high as 10kV. Luckily I just got a HT probe capable of 40kV. So it is perfectly safe to work on a charged up 63 as long as it is not singing. The stator voltage will at worst give you a shock, not fatal. The audio transformer.........mm.....

[#1616] Quad ESL speaker Oh, what a group of wonderful and thoughtful guys here! Isn't it the hypothesis that those who like ESL sounds are bound to be nice pals?

[#1617] Quad ESL speaker JL, No, we are simply a group of poor gangsters who could not afford the luxury of box speaker. The panel speakers are more affordable to us (or me) probably for the reason of the wooden enclosure being stripped off or even not included in these ESL speaker package. The upgrade to other speakers are costly, That's why we keep repairing the old ones.

| [#1618] Quad ESL speaker Dear Dennis, At last I have put the OTL with the ESL. Give me a week or two and we can fix a time for fun. So far I have tried the WE replica 300B and a heavy modded Gamma 211. The 211 with higher power, obviously sounded better than the 300B. the OTL sounds very promising but I want to give it a run first (I did not hook it for almost one year). But I can tell you that I started worrying my M8B and Quad II now. | [#1619] Quad ESL speaker mda, I guess you are getting along with the ESL pretty well from your writing. I hope the ESL speakers can please you and your family for a long long time. But do bear in mind that the ESL demands for first class amplication and front-end source for full justification. If still cannot get the sound stage lift up, please try lifting up the bottom of ESL 14' from floor. Of course you need to experiment different tilting angle once lifted. No rushing. Please take your time. Did I tell you that your EHT boards installed are brand new bought from One Thing Audio? You should have your ESL trouble free for at least 10 to 15 years |

[#1620] Quad ESL speaker If the output impedance of ESL57 can go down ridiculously to 0.8ohm, how do they work along well with Graaf or other OTL amp? Can anyone help me to explain this paradox. Same paradox to Magnaplanar. If nominal impedance of most Maggies are 4 - 6 ohm, why the deep pocket keep using OTA amp with Maggie? Sorry, am I asking a silly question?

[#1621] Quad ESL speaker Cp, I thought my living room was too small for them. Dennis, Space is the most expensive component of a sound system!
jcml 219.xxx.xxx.26 |
2006-10-16 23:28 |
[#1622] Quad ESL speaker Dennis, OTL does not work well with low impedance speakers but they CAN work with these speakers given appropriate design and special tubes. Basically all OTL uses paralleled white cathode follower with lots of feedback as output stage to reduce output impedance. The design objective of OTL is to dispense with the output transformer in order to eliminate the adverse effects of opt. In this respect, OTL excels in the area of transparency, soundstage and rendering of timbre. Aren't these all the areas where electrostatic and panel speakers excel, and therefore they make a good match. OTL suffers, in general, poor bass and dynamic and extremely low efficiency. Feel how hot the Graaf is.
