[#161] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi, Feikeung, PCS100, Gingers, No problem to pick you all up in one go. In this case, may I suggest the pick up schedule: 2:00pm pick up Gingers at your downstair 2:30pm pick Feikeung at ST 3:00pm pick up Patrick at Tseung-Kwan-O MTR I'll give you ball a call tomorrow afternoon to confirm the pick up location. May I ask Gingers kindly bring along your pre-amp just for one day. Feikeung, just bring your Graaf. Sorry Patrick, I have no mean of a reasonable 110V step down ( just a cheap one for my old DVD, it gets too hot so quicky when in use for a while) for your CD, it won;t do any justice to serious listening, so let's focus our listening using LP this time if you don't mind. I understand all your amp and CD are very heavy, expensive and fragile items, I really don't want any other of your belongings to suffer any possible damage, so unload as many item as possible. If you don't mind, let's fix it like this and let's have an enjoyable afternoon on Saturday. I shall be free till late evening, so join us dinner together if you can make it till late evening. Feikeung, please send me your mobile to my e-mail or call my mobile tomorrow afternoon: dkyyu@yahoo.com.hk or 9450 4803 I'll give you a shout when arrival at ST. John, My Lily Chan vinyl can't wait to sing you a song. Patrick, Let's talk about more ESL when we met. Happy weekend. Dennis

[#163] QUAD ESL speaker service Dennis......It is very nice of you to pick me up in Tseung Kwan O. It is quite a distance from Kowloon to Tseung Kwan O. I wouldn't mind to go to Ginger's place. So you can pick us up at the same time. So I will not bring my old Proceed CD player. I have a little portable CD player called Radio Shack Optimus CD-3400 which sound pretty good. I may as well bring that one along just in case some one would like to listen to some CDs. I'll see you at 2 p.m. Saturday downstairs of Ginger's home. Regds Patrick

[#165] QUAD ESL speaker service Dennis & all, may I know how the expert checked ur esl at ur home? My pair is with one unit gives a very low sound level causing the music is almost come from the one that working. Also, the red lamps for both did not light up immediately but light up after hour of charging (but blinking) for the one that working. The low sound unit did not light up. Is the EHT block u ordered epoxy sealed?

[#167] QUAD ESL speaker service rsbn589, may I know how the expert checked ur esl at ur home? My pair is with one unit gives a very low sound level ----------------------------------- The simple way to check the ESL is put your ears very close to the panel and move your ear across the panel very slowly. You will notice if one of the panel is not working. Low sound level can be caused by a torn diaphragm or low voltage from the EHT block. If you remove the front grill and the dust cover, you can actually see the diaphragm thru the small holes on the stator. If the diaphragm seems OK, then the problem may be the voltage like the one happened in Dennis's ESL.

[#168] QUAD ESL speaker service >may I know how the expert checked ur esl at ur >home? My pair is with one unit gives a very low >sound level causing the music is almost come from >the one that working. Most likely a defective EHT block of leaky panel. Check the secondaries of the EHT transformer. They should be 610V & 590V. Then check the outputs to the bass & treble panels. using an HV Probe, the bass output should be around 4KV and the treble 1.5KV. Compare the voltages with and without the panels connected. The reading should be higher with the bass panels connected.

[#171] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi, rsbn589, First of all, switch off both ESL at least one full day before any of your work. The high 6K voltage is definitely lethal!!! We concluded my case was EHT problem for the following two diagnosis given by the technician: 1) No panel damage. It is clean and tidy as new. 2) The problem ESL unit still produces clear and cripy sound with only sound sensitivity drop. If same to your case, I would say over 90% possibility is that the diodes of your EHT becoming ageing. You need to replace both EHT block. OnethingAudio in UK sold me a pair for GBP118 including postage. Just undo the 4 wires and replace the old one with the new board. Some soldering work needed. I'd asked my company technician to help me on this matter. After the EHT replacement, I need to turn down the volume knob of my QUAD for same volume and needenss to say, more details coming up when the speakers are fully charged meeting the 1.5K and 6K voltage specification. Replacing the diode is almost impossible to me as one needs to melt the bee wax filling the entire EHT block. Please let us know more of your case and tell us if you need help. Dennis

[#173] QUAD ESL speaker service an update. both units are with black spots/holes on the treble panels. two black holes on the low sound level unit while one hole on the other unit. the permenant fix will be replacing the panels with the new ones but expensive. is it advisible to play them if i only use tape to stick on the mylar holes as containment? btw, the front panel is with inch of dust. just did the 1st round cleaning with light soap and water. oh boys. forgot to mention. this is my newly acquired pair in black color and look elegant with original legs. i did notice the sound was slightly inbalance when audition this pair but i couldn't resist to buy them!!! the seller gave me a pair of new eht block which he bought from quad germany but they are uncovered by expoxy/wax. are they safe to use? p/s: grant, thks for the checking tips but i do not hv the high voltage probe.

[#174] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi, rsbn589, Before disposing the panel, can you wipe off the black spots with soft cloth? If yes, I suspect your panel only suffered light burnt. Most of the time, the light burnt spots can be removed and this would not affect performance after removal of all burnt marks per other users from internet. Otherwise, the panel would have been damaged badly needing replacement if serious burnt marks left even after repeated cleaning. Replacing the panel is a very costy move. Sometimes the replacement is more expensive than but another pair. One single panel replacement for ESL63 will cost $2800 only on material. So try cleaning before commiting on new panel. Can you post a photo of your gifted EHT boards showing all the possible cononection for review? regards Dennis Dennis

[#176] QUAD ESL speaker service Dear rsbn589, Is that the metal grille or the plastic dust cover behind it you are mentioning? The QUAD technician told me the plastic dust cover don't matter in sound performance if torn but it would easily cause the arching problem. The torn plastic cover allows dust to get inside into the speaker and adhere easily to the panel. Remember how ionizer works? The dust accumulates quickly on the panel and start forming a layer. On moisture day, the dust layer probably get wet triggering the what so called "arching" problem leaving heavy burnt spots on the panel. In worst case such as driving the ESL hard on wet day, the arching will damage the panel leaving holes on the membrane. That usually happen at treble panel (the one in the middle). I suspsect you have a torn or leaking plastic cover because your ESL panel has already accumulated with a thick layer of dust. To clean the panel, simply underscrew the metal grille and pull out the staples to remove the plastic cover. Make sure the ESL is OFF at least after one day. If you see holes on the sound membrane. You better leave it and find a professional to handle the replacement work. I remember there is a QUAD ESL web-site telling people with pictures how to remove the grille and dust cover when performing the inspection work. Can you find it? I read the above information from internet before placing my order for the EHT boards. Hope that helps.

[#177] QUAD ESL speaker service I forgot to mention. The internet people suggest to use a hand-held vaccum cleaner to remove the dust layer. Just for information only.

[#178] QUAD ESL speaker service I think it is more accurate to say the black spot/holes is on the dust cover. Since your dust cover have already accumulated inch of dust, I would just remove the whole dust cover to make way to inspect the diaphragm. The dust cover is not made of mylar, it is just a thin plastic sheet which is very easy to find when you need to re-cover the panel. 3M has very good product that fits the need. I suspect the problem is very un-likely on the black spot/holes on the dust cover. I saw some ESL57 have a few black spots and pieces of scotch tapes on the dust cover, but still produce excellent sound. It will not affect the sound quality. It is just a matter of looks, I agree with what Dennis said. Your panels only suffered light burnt and the light burnt usally made a very tiny hole like the size of a needdle hole on the diaphragm. It should not affect the sound quality much. Tiny needle holes on the diaphragm will not affect the sound quality but the severe torn will. I would check that out if the voltage on the EHT is normal.
