[#1783] Quad ESL speaker And I really look forward to a ESL57 challenge party to see which amp drive the Quad the best! --------------------------------------- Feikeung's ESL63 and the Graaf OTL should be in serviceable condition by then. Shall we include them in the challenge party? Will CP kindly organize the party? Regds

[#1784] Quad ESL speaker You haven't heard the V69a driving the ESL57 yet. ---------------------------------------------- Yes, and I am most keen to listen to this combo. And I hope I can get the V81 ready for the ESL57 party.

[#1788] Quad ESL speaker Dear all, it would be a great ESL party. Hon and Powercord must be yelling to us missing the party. No doubt, the most appropriate place to hold such a big party and the appropriate equipment is CP's workshop. I have the following comments for consideration by anyone yet when comparing the performance of different amplification for ESL. 1) the partnering pre-amp. While the Leak and Cary are the most friendly ones, the bloody QUAD II and Telefunken can only work well with its own and few other brand pre-amp. 2) the tube in use. VT75 vs KT66 vs WE300B vs EL34? 3) the choice of different speaker wire, powercord and interconnector. WE vs modern? I think the pre-amp and amp must be compared together as a system rather than individual. I leave it to CP and CP please instruct us if any wanted accessory list for the arrangement. Sorry CP, its seems like you the most appropriate man amongst us the lazy bones to manage this project. I really look forward to joining you guys that day. Perhaps before the big run in CP's workshop, I feel itchy to have a quick and mini field trial myself in my small flat, say German V69 or 73 vs British VT75/Cossor in QUAD II. Of course on same ground using own pre-amp. If possible to cp to bring his lovely German amp and Studer, I also wish 同場加演Studer open reel vs LP. I wonder how far the 45 rpm LP will behind the open reel after such a long period of magnetic tape depreciation. CP, I shall ensure my LP recorder player be maintained in top condition and ready for this day. Will replace your LP12 with a new drive belt when next visit.

[#1789] Quad ESL speaker - Quad II (as benchmark) - TFK V73 - TFK V81 - TFK V69a - Graaf GM20 - Cary 300B mono Anything else? ------------------- Any Leak amp? ------------------- I though Leak TL12.1 was already beaten by V69a in CP's system. Is that correct? We cannot afford to test amp already auditioned. Otherwise, I had 70 amp for the party.

[#1790] Quad ESL speaker In another tube amp shoot-out, one always face the question of which pre-amp and what tubes to use. If possible, we should just get the best possible combo. At the end of the days, we just want to find out what sound the best on the ESL57, to the individual's ears.

Let our Leak club members vote which pair will come :-) I recalled my 12.1 visited Partick before. My 25A visited both CP & Dennis and I did not recalled my 12.1 had visited CP's wrokshop before. I forgot as I could not find any photos. ![]() |

SUPPORT!!!!!! ----------------------------------- - Quad II (as benchmark) - TFK V73 - TFK V81 - TFK V69a - Graaf GM20 - Cary 300B mono Is it true that all the above amplifiers had never been auditioned with other amplifiers before? |

[#1796] Quad ESL speaker We cannot afford to test amp already auditioned. Otherwise, I had 70 amp for the party. ---------------------------------------- I still have Radford STA25 III, Leak TL/25 + & other to join the party. BTW, which pre amplifier will be used. Quad 22 or V72..... ^O^

[#1797] Quad ESL speaker Maybe we limit to one guest bringing one power amp or pre + power, which he think should sound the best with ESL57, to the party to challenge CP's V72 + V69a? How about that?

[#1801] Quad ESL speaker Gingers, I think that time you came with feikeung, Dennis. Edmund and Patrick, you brought the 12.1, right? I also have the close frame 12.1 driving the ESL in my place for over 3 weeks before I brought them to your place to compare with the open frame 12.1. During that time, I had used the transformer passive preamp, St84 and Leak Varislope III to drive the 12.1. I agree with Tim it's not an amp shoot-out. Just see which preamp/amp combo driving the 57 will be most appealing to the majority, and hopefully the ESL will be adequately revealing to show the different tonal signture of different combos. So no specific conditions will be set as long as there is the same pair of ESL in the same acoustic environment. I don't worry that much about tubes or cables used. So please bring your own accessories. Mind you I don't have any exotic cables at all, the most expensive pair of speaker cables that I have may be the AudioNote SPa which I don't use any more. Give me a few more weeks so that I can clear up the space as there are now so many parts lying around, or at least let me get the GM20 up and running.

[#1802] Quad ESL speaker Let's organize the line up this way: 1. Quad 22/Quad II - brought by Dennis 2. Eico ST84/Leak TL12.1 - brought by Gingers 3. Siemens V72/TFK V69a - host system 4. TFK V81 (driven by V72) - brought by Tim 5. Graaf GM20 (driven by transformer) - by feikeung V73 and Cary 300B are optional if we have time. Any other nominees? I think we can have up to 8 systems if we spend 30 min. on each system.
