[#1823] Quad ESL speaker I think I have good ears, but I need no one to endorse it. I can 安心地聽音樂, but I also 挑剔 my system; so what am I?? --------------------------------------------- No more no less, 100% CP :-)

[#1830] Quad ESL speaker CP, It would be definitely great fun with so many great and interetsing gentlemen coming to your party. Tim, Limage, Patrick, Gingers, (mda and rcwy, hope they can make it) .... and so on. Hope Feikeung's brother-in-law getting well and Feikeung return in time. I'll have my QUAD II/22 upgraded to quad-matched pre-War VT75 for the party.

[#1831] Quad ESL speaker Gingers and Limage, I noticed that over half of the gentlemen expressing their interest coming along to the party are ESL users or owners. For a moment of truth, will you seriously consider keeping a pair of ESL, whether a pair of 57, 63 or latest 2905, as your second open-top cabriolet or family backup speaker?

[#1832] Quad ESL speaker Dennis...........................no point pushing our friends to the corner. We like others to appreciate the merits of ESL as much as we appreciate others' setups, such as 3/5a, Maggies, Tannoy, horns etc. Personally I admit there are quite a bit of limitations in the ESL design which could be strengths of others. Diversity is what makes this world interesting!!

[#1834] Quad ESL speaker CP, Right. But the ESL is really low low low cost.... I would be tempted to acquire a pair for Sunday leisure or ...... Now I am thinking about a pair of ESL63 or Maggie ahead of next year procurement plan.

[#1835] Quad ESL speaker Dear Gingers, I understand you are a QUAD II owner. Hope yours and Richard's museum will consider the addition of other QUAD vintage in your collection list. How about a QUAD 22, a nice pre-amp with very high craftsmenship quality for your QUAD II.

[#1836] Quad ESL speaker QUAD 22 I avoid it :-) I was told Quad II power transformer is always easily overheated with a Quad 22 :-)

[#1837] Quad ESL speaker Hope yours and Richard's museum will consider the addition of other QUAD vintage in your collection list ________________________________________________________________________ Dennis, Why don't you consider building a Quad museum yourself? There aren't too many things really. You already have the Quad 22/II and ESL57, teh ESL63 is already in the pipeline. There is only one Quad power amp prior to the Quad II. I can donate my Quad 33/303 for your display.

[#1838] Quad ESL speaker Personally I admit there are quite a bit of limitations in the ESL design which could be strengths of others. ------------------------------------ I agree w/CP's opinion. After more than 10 years audition w/ESL57, I agree it has quite a lot of limitation and drawbacks: 1. It is a selfish speaker only entertain its master (one man). 2. Very fragile. Incapable of play loud. 3. Incapable of reproduce dynamic effect and punchy bass. 4. Hard to bland in with home furniture and position placement due to its size. A friend using Apogee/Krell combo claimed the ESL57 has no high, no low and the output sound like mosquito singing. I accepted all its limitation and drawbacks and still in love with it after such longtime . My conclusion is: ESL57 is NOT a speaker for everybody. If you are keen for dynamic effect, deep punchy bass, and the taste of "Aji-No-Moto", that speaker is definately not your cup of tea. The ESL57 is for music lovers rather than Hi Fi lovers. Regds

[#1839] Quad ESL speaker Or a Linn museum.............well may be just the LP12 museum; from the very first model like mine to the latest one, up to CD12! And a collection of all the tone arms and cartridges. Would be very interesting.

[#1840] Quad ESL speaker The ESL57 is for music lovers rather than Hi Fi lovers ________________________________________________________________ In fact, all sound reproduction equipment could be for music lovers. It all depends the attitude. Remember what Simon & Garfunkel said in the "Sound of Silence".......people hearing without listening. Sound reproduction is a scientific invention. We ordinary people often get carried away and distracted by the look of sound reproduction equipment, or hifi equipment, and put more attention on the science side, i.e. sound reproduction rather than music reproduction. We listen to the sound and hear the music. We should be doing the other way round. We should listen to the music and hear the sound. Those people who swing to the sound of iPod are a group of blessed people. They are swinging to the music, not the sound. They can listen to and feel the music through the lousy sound reproduced by an iPod or MP3. We, the not so blessed group, look for some attributes common to music and sound, such as dynamic range, bass reproduction, smooth midrange etc., in order to appreciate the music. But the most important attributes of a piece of music are its melody, tempo and dynamics such as fortissimo etc. I wonder which speaker, no matter how low fi it is, cannot reproduce the tempo and melody correctly. We the ordinary not so musical people cannot feel the passion and get the message of the music just from the melody and the tempo. We have to hear the lowest bass to give us the excitement and feel the tension, not from the melody or the build up of the bass strings. Do we really have to feel the vibration of the voice chord of the singer to get the passion? The recording of Lee Heung Lan's 3 years is lousy, but we all feel she sings passionately. Furtwangler's greatest Beethoven 5 is in mono. It sounds the same whether you play it on AV. So for the not so great performances, we have our personal taste and look for different attributes in the sound to show the passion in the music. Some look for bass, some for image, some for hall effect etc. Be hell, how does hall effect relate to a great performance. When in a live concert, there are bound to be a lot of hall effect, but ultimately it still depends on how the conductor read the score. As different speakers or setup have different sound attributes, so some love ESL, some horn, some cone and some full range. So I wouldn't say ESLs are for music lovers only, we are still hifi lovers like others. May be the sound attributes as excel by the ESL have more overlaps with music attributes and not to the extremes of some other speakers which emphasize on sound attributes only.

[#1841] Quad ESL speaker My only point is, we are not as blessed as to be able to enjoy music via AM radio. If we have a pair of speakers we like, just use them to listen and enjoy music and not indulge in just always playing a percussion disc or a double bass sound effect disc which has no music at all.

[#1842] Quad ESL speaker Sorry Feikeung and Allan. I'm not lazy in repairing your ESLs and indulge in bullshitting here. I just had a meeting in Central and didn't bother to go back to the office. So I'm home early and start browsing R33.
