[#1885] Quad ESL speaker Have you actually tried that? I have tried my VT75s on the Quad II and it didn't sound as enticing as the GEC KT66. ---------------------------------------------- Changing the subject a bit. I have actually tried most versions of GEC KT66/VT75 and Mullard EL37 on my Quad II and my personal ranking are (top being the least liking) : - GEC KT66 brown base smoked glass - GEC KT66 brown base clear glass circle getter - GEC KT66 brown base clear glass cup getter - GEC KT66 black base GT bottle - GEC KT66/CV1075 black base small ST bottle smoked glass (this could be an OEM Brimar 6L6G/CV1947) - GEC KT66/VT75 large ST bottle clear glass - Mullard large bottle EL37 - GEC KT66/VT75 large ST bottle smoked glass I have yet tried the GEC KT66/VT75 large ST bottle black glass and WE350B. In general, I found the earlier large ST bottle KT66/VT75 to have a bigger and grander sound stage compare to the GT bottle KT66/VT75. And the Mullard large bottle EL37 has even better resolution but it sounds a bit dark in the Quad II to my taste. Maybe we should go to Dennis place for a Quad II tube shoot-out someday.

[#1886] Quad ESL speaker Tim, Your idea of KT66 shoot-out is really fascinating, and not difficult to manage indeed. It would be my great pleasure and honour providing the QUAD II for the shoot-out Just give me a shout when ready.

[#1887] Quad ESL speaker Dennis, I would need to source a matched quad set of WE350B first. And they cost more than a pair of Quad II!

[#1888] Quad ESL speaker Tim, My goodness. In this case, I must ask some expert to ensure the conditions of the old Hunts capacitors

[#1893] Quad ESL speaker Tim and Gingers, The improvement switching from black base KT66 to smoke glass VT75 is substantial enough for a layman like me to tell the difference right from the beginning of any reasonable vocal or orchestra piece of music.

[#1894] Quad ESL speaker Gingers, I recall you have a sizeable stock of clear glass VT75. Was it you or DD845?

[#1896] Quad ESL speaker Tim, I once thought the old tubes showed up in your photo were found by Dr Indiana Jones or Dr Who from the ancient times.

[#1897] Quad ESL speaker I started “listening” to music (with heart and soul) only 3 years ago ---- and am still learning….. -------------------------------- For those are cares about their soul. If you go too fast, you better sit down sometimes to make sure your soul can catch up with your body.

[#1899] Quad ESL speaker Dennis, Prefer in the late afternoon (say around 5pm or later), so I can accomodate my son after his learning session end at 4pm (and wife) first.

[#1900] Quad ESL speaker All the Scheherazades. Which one do you like best. After all these years, Kondrashin and Stokowski are still my favourites. Ansermet is like mother telling a bed-time story. Softly but with a lot of fantasies. Reiner is like watching an Indiana Jones movie, exciting but not inducing any imagination, everything's there. Jansons, the conductor introduced to me by doctorjohn, came as a nice surprise. Myung-Whun Chung is now playing on the ESL. ![]()

[#1901] Quad ESL speaker Holy maloney! That's enough stories for a lifetime! Reiner in general is much more listenable on LP than CD. For alternatives I'd nominate: -Celibidache -Lovro von Matacic

[#1902] Quad ESL speaker Finished. Myung-Whun Chung's Scheherazade proved to be excellent. The accompanying Firebird is not as brilliant though. Jazz a little with Ben Webster and Oscar Peterson before dismantling feikeung's Graaf GM20. ![]()
