[#1943] Quad ESL speaker Hi,rsbn, I did try toe in but not pleasing at all in my place. After some trial, I now settled with both ESL placed 5 inches away from side wall and about 6 feet away from the rear window. Toe-in is about 3 degree, very little. All placement is judged by ear listening. The followings are some of my findings in my place: 1) If both ESL placed less than 3 inches from side wall, the sound stage will muddle seriously disregard of rear wall distance or toe-in angle 2) My ESL requires more toe-in when placed away from side wall. And vice versa, the closer to side wall, the lesser the toe-in angle. I need to place the ESL tangent to side wall when only 3 inches away. The tilting angle needs appropriate adjustment when distance between ESl varies. For info, my room is 10 feet 6 inches wide. 24 feet long. The ceiling heightis 9 feet 6 inches. I shall come back to share more after lunch. My friends are calling. Hope this is not boring to you However, the distance from side wall does not matter much between 4 to 8 inches. So I settled at 5 inches

[#1944] Quad ESL speaker Hello, rsbn, I think each individual listening room has its own unique acoustic character deserving different way of positioning. I have a long and narrow room with lots of restriction becausing sharing with my family. Can you tell us more about the size and layout of your listening room? I guess likely you have a much wider room than mine and in such case you may need to place your ESL away from any boundary wall and increase the toe-in angle accordingly. The ESL57 is not a genuine dipolar, so I don't believe it is necessary placing the ESL too far away from rear wall. I once pulled out the speaker almost half way of the full length and the end result? A total diaster no matter how I adjusted the toe-in angle!! The sound stage was completely smeshed and lost.

[#1947] Quad ESL speaker Dennis, my esl57s are sitting in 18ft*18ft square room. I would need to pull them about 1.5m away from rear wall, toe them in to face the the listener directly. It seems the placement diagram provided by Dr. Quad works. Need more time to assess. Thanks for sharing.

[#1948] Quad ESL speaker I couldn't let this CD pass without introducing to you with my highest recommendation - another "Scheherazade" by Enrique Batiz with the Philharmonia Orch. and Bernard Cribbins as the story teller. I must confess I was deeply attracted to the music and the story telling this morning that so far I still haven't done anything. Both the performance and the recording are excellent. If the Reiner is like watching a movie, this Batiz version is like watching a cartoon, very colourful and full of imaginations. ![]()

[#1950] Quad ESL speaker Dear Powercord, Nice hearing from you this morning. Frankly, I cannot differentiate between OTL ESL and the original one. If the OTL is superior, I guess the progress my OTL is now in the same par to the original ESL and more run-in hours will be needed to reveal the full potential of the OTL. Perhahps, I should speed up my mind to ship back the still sealed ESL NOS from Canada to compare the to the OTL. The QUAD II, may not earn its best place in every individual scoring when confronting with other greatest amp like Leak or German battleship, but I still regard it as the best matching amp with ESL. So it is a down on earth compromise between sweetness and driving power but it never fails ESL user by any mean. I really endeavour you are the owner of three pairs QUAD II. The main problem of QUAD II is that there are too many on this planet and they are too cheap for acceptance to audiophile. A British paradox?? I am excited meeting you on Saturday morning to discuss the double QUAD project. I'll show you how my phono works to provide dual source to drive dual QUAD II/22 systems Regards Dennis

[#1951] Quad ESL speaker OTL is error. It should be read as OTA - One Thing Audio. My apology. PS: I must be thinking too much on Feikeung's Graaf OTL.

[#1952] Quad ESL speaker rsbn589, Are you using the Leak 12.1 driving the ESL57? We have had better result here with the 12.1 than the 25A, and we are keen to try more preamp combinations with the 12.1. Mind sharing your experience here?

[#1953] Quad ESL speaker The main problem of QUAD II is that there are too many on this planet and they are too cheap for acceptance to audiophile _______________________________________________________________________________________ Isn't the abundance in supply serves to the best interest of we audiophiles. The Quad II is in itself a British classic and I believe most audiophiles who are into vintage own a pair, if not more, Quad II. The problem is whilst Quad II may be a good match for ESL, it sounds bit soft and bass shy in most other systems and there are now many other choices that excel in these areas. The lower price of it is never a problem for audiophiles,if not even a welcome. The limitation of application is. My V69a is about the same price as a pair of Quad II and it must be one of the best german amps available, easily out-performs a vintage Marantz 9 at 10 times its price. But the critical matching of preamp limits it application as well as its price.

[#1954] Quad ESL speaker DJ, feikeung, I tested the MG12 with Cello 350 yesterday and it blew away the Cello Elves in almost every aspect except the very deep bass. This morning I drove them with a Quad 303. It is much sweeter and detailed than the Cello 350, notorious for its coarse-grain, unfortunately not powerful enough for the fortissimo. But that is already better than the V69a!! I conclude that ss amps suit the MG12 much better than valves. It would be nice to have your Krell here.

[#1955] Quad ESL speaker CP, Just fior sharing I bought a pair QUAD II/22 for my elder brother to drive his Focus Audio 78s as well as a pair of old Sonus faber bookshelf occassionally. My brother is bass advocate and used to drive his B&M floorstand and Sonus Faber using Krell pre-amp and 100S. His Krell is blown with smoke and never get recovered despite serviced twice by Excel. He is now completely satisfied with the QUAD II/22 when playing the loud passage of orchestra music except the Mercury 1812 of course. I'd once used the QUAD II to drive the Sonus Faber and LS3/5s to Blue-ray, Gingers etc. playing the take-five and money for nothing records. Woow, the QUAD showed its mighty strength and I think it was quite impressive to the guests.

[#1957] Quad ESL speaker Dear Gingers, I always think bringing a set of QUAD instead of a bunch of banana when next visiting you. Not necessary coming for hifi, meeting a nice chap like you is a pleasant thing. My QUAD amp is a vintage, sooner or later they will...... I guess my ESL will last longer than the QUAD amp, hence I alway open my eyes wide for a modern amp as replacement in event of final breakdown someday.

[#1959] Quad ESL speaker cp, Rumor has it that the Maggie and Krell 50/100W per channel class A amp combo can be quite formidable. You might want to give it a shot. I’m back from Singapore. My brother was discharged from Singapore General and is recovering comfortably.

[#1960] Quad ESL speaker the QUAD showed its mighty strength and I think it was quite impressive to the guests ____________________________________________________________________________________ Dennis, I have nothing against Quad II and up to now I'm still a proud owner of 2 pairs of Quad II. I owned a Bedini 25/25, Audionics CC-2 and Mark 335 long enough to compare with my beloved Quad II on a day to day basis. A-B comparison is the cruellest test. The Quad II certainly plays loud but invariably I found the few opening notes of double bass and bass guitar of Bamboo by John Kaizan disappeared with the Quad II and some piccatos became pianissimo. I encourage you to compare directly with John's 12.1.

[#1962] Quad ESL speaker cp, Trust me once. The driving power of a properly owrking QUAD II with 22 using Mullard M8137 is only slightly behind MC240 or Marantz 8B. When comes to clarity and sweetness of sound and instruments, the QUAD edge the two Ms in my opinion. I once compared these 3 amp (many pairs available indeed) using 3/5a in encorehifi months after months. It may not be as mighty as Leak, but surely can eat up most modern speaker like FA 78S or Sonus Faber small bookshelf.
