| [#43] Transformer Volume Control preamp Pass by Don't mean to discourage you guys, in fact it is kind of fun to compare & witness the difference between TVC and resistor type volume control. Just try not to spend too much resources on this subject. Personal experience of the TVC is they broadcast their merits without letting you know their limits. Theory goes well, BUT! Basically the TVC is a transformer, so you are incorporating inductance into the circuitry, or in fact you are adding a filter. Yes, digital noise is gone but hand in hand with some signals ie. signal loss. Transformers are sensitive to loading, both input & output. Vary the loading, the freq response will change, this is something we couldn't control. So, every step on the secondary in this case face a different freq response because every step has difference turns or different inductance. Last, the signal has to be transferred thru magnetic field in case of a trans. For resistor type, signal just have to pass thru the contacts. Now after all the above BS, generally resistor type volume control sound more natural or less coloured, and cheaper. You don't have to believe me, witness it yourself & make a comparison. Cheers |
