Unlike my days we had to wait for the monthly meeting up with the photography club, lucky if you had one. I miss the days we learnt how to polish a glass into a lens for the telescope. So nice.. and also learning this ( some lumix camera have such easy "grain level" setting) **** To get more grain from digital monochrome photography (specifically dedicated sensors like the Leica Monochrom or converted cameras), you must override the sensor's inherent low-noise, high-fidelity design. The best approaches involve a combination of intentional in-camera settings, post-processing, and, for the most authentic look, using film emulation plugins. 1. In-Camera Techniques (For Raw Files) While digital noise is technically not the same as film grain, you can make it behave similarly by forcing the sensor to work harder. Underexpose at High ISO: Raise your ISO (e.g., 1600–3200 or higher) and underexpose the shot by 1–2 stops. This forces the sensor to gain up, introducing significant noise into the shadows. "Push" in Post: After underexposing, raise the exposure in post-processing. This amplifies the noise you captured, making it more prominent throughout the image. Disable Noise Reduction: Ensure all in-camera noise reduction is turned off to keep the noise as raw and "chunky" as possible.
