[#1] 北京道 一 號 / # 1 Peking Road " Notes of an Audiophile "

It is 7:00 am on this beautiful Wednesday morning. In 5 minutes, my ride is suppose to pick me up to the Golf Club. Half hour ago, I was seriously debating about weather I should play 18 holes of golf on "virgin tee" this morning where the freshly manicured turf resemble that of the 48 ounce carpeting in Shangri-la's penthouse or stay-in and start a new thread on Review33. The fact that you are reading this is unequivocal confirmation that I am completely capable of making logical decisions.

In any case, this thread is a tribute to a group of audiophile "legends" & "die-hards" from 1970s here in Hong Kong. From "tubes" to "transistors", "upstairs" to "basement bargains" and everything in between! A place where everyone can cultivate their views in Art, Music, Sex and perhaps occasionally, about their Hi-Fi philosophy.

ps: Don't get confused, this is not just for "old farts" to participate. Everyone is welcome to join in. But if you are a female age under 35, you are most welcome!!

Home visit.........

We (doctorjohn, Wadia, johnny-walker and I) had a wonderful visit at limage's waterfront castle in Sai Kung last Friday. The core of his system, conrad-johnson Premier 1 / Maggies 3.5 combo was well executed and exceptionally enticing. The sound pallet of limage's preference is no doubt "Romantic",but not shy in anyway (like the owner)! It wasn't so much the merits of each individual components but the system as a "whole" played gracefully and with great competent. And the 6' tall Maggies disappeared into the air literally right in front of me.

After few rounds (or bottles, not sure?) of red wine, we had a lengthy discussion on how critical it is to clean every connecting point in a system from cables, terminals, power lines and right down to the tube sockets for each individual tubes! It was then clear to me that the one special quality of limage's talent is actually not so much in the gear he uses but lies within his personal obsession in attention-to-details, microscopically speaking. What is also clear is that our hobby is becoming increasingly dominated by adherents who have no discipline for the effort it takes to generate maximum return on their resources. Simply owning a bunch good gears is a start, but there's a great deal of owner's sweat and hard-earned knowledge involved in getting the most out of a particular set of choices made for a particular room. Anyone can have a nice kitchen, but to cook?

So I thank you, limage, for putting the "Hi-Fi 101" into action. And for me, it was one of very few occasions where I felt I was being drawn into the music during a listening session. Bravo.

ps: My sincere thanks to Margaret.

Kris,

Congratulation! :)

BTW, why this title? Any reason for choosing Peking Road No. 1, not anywhere else?

I visited Limage's place on 20 July and I have posted my feedback in the EICO and ESL threads around the days after.

As Kris has pointed out the various points that we may learn from veteren audiophiles. From Ivan (Limage), I think his serious attitudes to audio is perhaps the most for me. As Kris rightly pointed out, the emphassis is NOT on how much money people can spend on audio gears, but on how seriously we treat our hobby, audio.

Several examples:

a) cleaniness of contact points - Limage spent hours to clean all the contact points involved (power plugs, RCAs, etc.) by suitable cleaners every time he changed a gear in his system. Unused RCAs are capped and any holes are sealed to avoid dust getting into the contacts.

All his efforts are to make sure that there is no slightest blockage in the electrical and signal transmission. He estimated that such, together with the condition of your household electrical cabling, amounts to 10 to 20 percents (Limage, pls. correct me if my memory does not serve me well) of the audio performance of your ENTIRE system.

b) Perfect working condition of your gears - Do you know what sort of tubes he usually use? Russian tubes! But how many tubes he bought for matching only a few quads for use - hundreds!

Limage's point is to make sure that the gears, same as the electrical contacts, work in perfect condition. His emphassis is not on how many hundreds of thousands of dollars an audio amplifier worths, but the actual ability of the amplifier to work good! Why? He estiamted that the audio gears altogether accounts for about 20% of the overall performance of the audio system.

Where are the rest - the most important 60%?

Haha..

我買關子, or let Kris, others, or Limnage himself to talk about.

As a user of vintage gears - vintage tubes, vintage preamps, vintage power amps, vintage speakers - I feel really shy stock-taking Limage's 秘笈, the serious attitudes to audio!

Vintage audio amp lovers tend to ignore contact points (RCAs, tube pins, etc.) as far as they have sound to come out.

Vintage audio amp lovers compare one amp with the other amp as far as the amps being compared seemingly work good.

Shy.. :)

Kris, you have done it again. Your pot-pouri contributions made this av forum much more interesting. I've the privilage of joining the Peking Road meeting on several occasions and I can assure you it is fun, entertaining and motivating.
You heard and learned
a lot, esp from limage, the walking bible of h.k. hi-fi history.
I also have the honour to be guest of limage audio haven, All I can say is his Magneplan is a demonstration of what this speaker should sound like. You would not believe it until you hear it.
Besides he is the perfect host, makes you feel like a V.I.P.

Hi limage, the space looks a lot deeper than 20', you're so lucky to have a dedicated music den. Do you think planar speakers are suitable for very deep space, say 30 feet long?

Dear feikeung,

I have yet to meet you!

The width ranges from 12 feet on one side to 13.5 on the other. The speakers sit roughly mid-way with no more than 8 inches from side walls.

Kris, I woke up this morning and found this cute thread. Tell me what is it about? I think I know Dr. John and may be some of you but just can't figure out who is who by their initials. Anyway, my system consists of Mark Levinson and B+W N802. I've come back to vinyle a month ago and have bought a EAR 834P phono amp. I can say I am hearing music as I haven't heard before.

Good morning, friends! I was thinking of posting something about our visit to limage on the JC thread, but this is even better!

First of all, thanks for limage's spontaneous invitation. We are all happy we went. The house and decorations (and hifi) all reveal limage's impeccable taste.

Supplement on details of his system:

-ENSEMBLE transport and DAC (old generation; gold with wood knobs; I think also named Dirondo/Dichrono)

-TECHNICS SP10 direct drive on professional lead platter on stand. ?ARM with KISEKI cartridge, fed into KOETSU MC step up transformer, then into the MM part of EAR 834P (bypassing the stock small transformers)

-PASS 0.3 3-chassis dual mono preamp. This design is interesting in placing all the control and digital circuitry in the power supply. This preamp recently replaced the ARC SP-11.

-CONRAD JOHNSON Premier One. rcwy may have made a mistake here, the 6550's are GE's I believe. This amp has had all the troublesome tube sockets replaced and, according to image, that's the secret to its longevity.

-I believe mostly all rather ordinary cables.

To the side, not shown in the pic, is a long and narrow bench which we placed our wine bottles on, but which image uses as a workbench. He solders things and even replace ribbons!

Supplement on the superb sound:

-to me jazz almost has a horn quality. In the right spot, sound is just everywhere. Both Johnny Hodges and Miles were very good.

-the classical album I liked the best was the Classic Sound Ansermet Mendelssohn Midsummer Night's Dream. Super string details, and as with planars, you feel all the individual singers standing there.

-Unlike rcwy and Kris, I personally do not feel the sound to be "romantic", rather slightly towards the other side of neutrality. As an example, Ray Brown's double bass sounded more romantic on rcwy's Tannoy than on the Maggies. Romantic or not, it was great sound overall.

Given the rather humble price of some of the components, the system certainly out-performed almost all of the million dollar set-ups we have heard.

But then I've always been a Maggie fan.

Long time no hear, no see!

Less into AV now? I'm glad you are into vinyl again. With your super LP collection, you should have done that a long time ago!

Can we visit you one Saturday afternoon?

Yes, nicknick. My former room was 76 feet deep. I guess one has to pick the right speaker to fit the right room, planar or box alike.

rcwy:

To answer your question, 北京道 一 號 is where another hifi group, mostly older guys, go to yumcha. I know of some of the following people (limage, correct me if I'm wrong):

沙田麥: Closely related to limage (maybe the whole group is). In a room in a Fotan industrial bldg he uses 4 panels of Maggies (I don't remember, maybe 3.5 + part of Tympani). Micromega transport, AN DAC (near top model), Roksan TT, Goldmund amps...Sound is also excellent and holographic.

Ken 少: ARC CD3, Goldmund TT, CJ Art + Premier 12 monoblocks, Wilson Alexandria (or Grand Slamm, can't be sure)

珠寶 Leung: Dynaudio Consequence. Top clearaudio TT, Cello.

Of these people I only know 珠寶 Leung relatively well. The others I've met only once.

As for your 關子, the other 60% are the ears. Is that what you are thinking?
