Bernard Ching, former Retired business owner in the automotive field Being an engineer and tire dealer with service facilities for over 50 years and experiences in drive train development and tire studies, Michelin is my first choice in tires. They invented steel radial tires - first used in Paris subwaycars in the turn of the century. They were the first to use segmented molds to obtain uniformity while others use clam shell molds. GM usually use Goodyears for their Corvettes, but uniformity was a problem with Goodyear. GM then came out with the 2001 specification and we tested a large number of tires and found Michelin had the least "Radial force variation" on their tires, thus delivering a much better ride and lower NVH "Noise, Vibration and Harshness" numbers. Michelin did have their problems when they first came to the US and they were tasked to supply Ford's Lincoln Continentals in late 60s and early 70s. They had a lot separation until they solved the problem. Most problems I have with the Michelins are microscopic sidewall cracks usually after 3 to 4 years of use. Other brands don't seem to have that problem until much later. Being a tire dealer and auto repair facility for over 40 years after I left GM, I have sold Goodyear, Michelin, Toyo, Bridgestone and Cooper tires and experienced fewer problems with Michelin. They also own BFGoodrich and Uniroyal, but they are not speciality tire manufacturers. Michelins product line is exceptional for the general public, providing excellent tread life, fair traction on their S and H rated tires and good directional control. Michelins sold at Costco have slightly different tread pattern from those sold at independent Michelin dealers. The Michelin "X" sold earlier at Costco will have a slightly different tread design than tires sold through other tire dealers due to an agreement with Michelin dealers. They are labelled as "HX" for tire dealership sales only. All newer designs other than the "X" models are the same with dealers. Also, warranty at Costco is handled in-house by Costco at Costco locations, whereas tire dealership tires are warrantied at tire delerships throughout the United States. Michelin was and is still better than other tire manufacturers because they pay special attention to "Radial Force Variation". A short explanation to that is their tires are more round than their competitors underload because they pay special attention to their bead area where the rubber meets the rim. Every tire is check by inflating it after the molding process and a load of 1000 lb is placed on the tire to check how round it is by measuring the vertical spindle displacement |
