[#1423] Quad ESL Have to apologize to Patrick for my surprise visit this afternoon. Just eager to find out how the new EHT by Patrick's magic hand sounds. Patrick's ESL with the new EHT shows obvious improvement, in particular in the bass region. With the better bass, the tonal balance is now much thicker and full bodied. Thanks to Patrick feeding me with more orchestral music this time, the strings groups sound much more realistic albeit the soundstage is still quite limited by the size of the room. Many thanks to Patrick again for making me a pair of new EHT boards for replacement. While Wah Gor was still in the ICU, he was equally concerned with the making of the new boards and advised that high voltage diodes (5kV) can be found in a shop in Fa Yuen Street which sells TV parts.

[#1424] Quad ESL I also went through the entire "Merry Widow" with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf on reel to reel this morning and have to declare that my venture to create a deeper and wider soundstage than limage's with the ESL57 in my workshop a failure. The scale is just not comparable. However, I start to convince myself (or try to convince myself) that the smaller scale may be more reasonable. When I went through the whole opera and not just listened to the introduction to Act II "iche bitte, hier jetzt zu verweilen....." with Schwarzkopf standing stationary in the middle, I started to wonder how Schwarzkopf could dash 20' from one corner of the stage to another in about a second is possible. May be moving 8~9' with my smaller soundstage is more reasonable. I have to go to limage again and ask him to play the entire opera and not just the show piece to fool me again. ![]()

[#1425] Quad ESL Just eager to find out how the new EHT by Patrick's magic hand sounds. ------------------------------ CP......In fact, I'm anxious to invite evaluation from the most serious audiophile for the tonal performance of the new EHT. Fortunately, after a few hours of test drive, the most picky and discriminating appraiser has endorsed and acknowledged the performance of the English beauty. I would like to thank Edmund for his effort in the procurement of the parts for the new EHT. He went thru all the trouble trying to get the high voltage caps and diodes (3000 volt or higher) which is not popular in HK. Special thanks to Dennis for his courier service runing back and forth. I wonder how much his gasoline bill will be this month. My mission is not complete yet. I will continue to listen to the ESL for a couple weeks before I pour the bee wax back to the new EHT. Since I am already in the process of making EHT boards, I may as well make a few more sets for CP and Dennis and back ups for myself. I will post some photo to share with our friends. Regds

[#1427] Quad ESL doctorjohn, Thanks for the recommendation. I have a similar one with Wand and the Gurzenith Orchester of Cologne on Testament which is also very good, but I miss this NDR one. Will try to find it. Will this be available in HK Records? ![]()

[#1428] Quad ESL cpsjj: I did borrow your version from the library. The younger Wand is always very good, but the older one just sounds that little bit grander. HK Records and Percival may have the other one, which is incidentally also available in a Japanese edition (RCA best 100 or some such). But that's too much duplication for you. It took me a while to realize who Wah Gor is. Oh boy. Is he on anti-coagulants now? Which hospital is he in?

[#1429] Quad ESL doctorjohn, At our age, we always give favouritism to attributes come by with age. I remember when I was fresh out of uni, I was the most innovative one in airport planning and built the best cargo terminal in the world with lots of new concepts. Now I always start with "experience told me that.................."

[#1434] Quad ESL I did an experiment today with the tilting angle of the ESL. With the axis always pointing to my ears, I reduced the tilting angle of the speaker and I have to adjust my chair lower; likewise I increased the tilting and I have to sit higher. There is, as expected, no tonal difference, but a rather significant change in the imaging. By imaging, I do not mean a razor sharp image as if a point source is achieved. You can quite easily achieve a sharp image with the ESL and by adjusting the toe in, to enlarge or reduce the size of that image as you like. But there is a point where you do not just hear a small mouth singing or the sound of an instrument from a point but suddenly you feel the existence of the singer and the full body of the instrument. This is what I have done with the tilting angle. But the puzzle is, the tilting angle never change relative to the position of my ears. It just changed relative to the floor. Anyone can offer a scientific explanation?
